Make Your Own Jedi Costume

Make Your Own Jedi Costume Make Your Own Jedi CostumeThere is the fancy costume competition in the school and your young one wants to be a Jedi Warier. What do you do to get the exact type he wants? You can not afford to make your young one feel uncomfortable with a misfit costume. So the best way out is to make a costume that fits him and makes him look straight out from the Star Wars saga.

Star Wars saga introduced the Jedi tribe and the costumes they wore. Director George Lucas had gone for the Jedi costume that was made up of various parts. So it can be a tricky business to make a Jedi costume. The Jedi costume is made up of an inner shirt, a robe or a karate gi that reaches up to the knees, khaki slacks, high riding boots, a cloth belt, two long sashes, and a loose cloak. Some of these items you can easily buy from the market and some you can create yourself.

The various things that you would require to get this costume ready are a Sewing machine, fabric (get two different colors for the cloak and the rest part of the outfit), patterns for karate gi and bathrobe, a turtle neck t-shirt, measuring tape, a pair of scissors, some matching thread, pins, khaki slacks, high riding boots, and a cloth belt. You can get the accessories like the sword from the general stores or kids’ toy stores etc.

Now, your sewing kit is equipped to make your own Jedi costume:Make Your Own Jedi Costume1 Make Your Own Jedi Costume

  1. The most visible part is creating the big V shaped neck shirt. You can fake that with two long sashes folded and kept on the inner shirt and stitch it to give it a proper shape. The shape can reach up to the waist, where you can secure the shapes bottom with the belt.
  2. Making a karate gi is not that difficult and you can easily buy the patterns in the market. However, ensure that the costume you are going to make is longer than the karate gi. The karate gi needs to be dyed to the tan color as it is the prominent color of the Jedi costume. The karate gi can now be fastened with the cloth belt or obi and a little bit of the karate gi can be pulled up (so, make sure the karate gi is little longer than the knee length for this purpose).
  3. For the tabards, you can choose leather or thick shiny material made like strips of about 4 to 6 inches wide (measure your kid’s shoulders). The tabard needs to be thicker so that it stays properly on the shoulders. It needs to be fastened with the belt.
  4. The cloth belt or the obi needs to be wider and can be made up of home spun wool to make it look slightly bulgy rather than sticking flatly to the karate gi. You can also put two folds of a khaki cloth to make it look fat. For fastening this you can attach a Velcro that usually stays clean and tight. The belt is wider that the usual belt so, it can go up to 4 inches for the kids. You can also dye mobile pouches in the same color as the cloth belt and attach it to look exactly like the Jedi warier costume. You can also pin some steel buttons and claps to make it look like carrying weapons.
  5. The cloak can be attached with a bigger hood that can fall on the shoulders leaving enough space around the sides of the head. It is usually double the size of your kid but it is just long enough to reach above the ankles.

Now, you are ready with your Jedi costume. The last thing required is to wear it with perfection. You may like to try out and see how it fits and make the alteration before the final day.
