  • Whenever you decide to begin writing references in your resume for a particular job, always brainstorm a list before doing so. Do not forget the fact that you have to mention names of only those associates and colleagues who will say well about you. Never ever include those persons in your references list about whom you have a flicker of doubt that they might speak ill about you. Do not take a risk by mentioning names of persons holding high positions in your previous company believing that your employer will not bother to call them up. It is a lesser known fact that many employers actually call up the references mentioned in your resume to gather an idea about your working style and past performance. Therefore make sure that your references list includes only those friends about whom you are very sure that they will speak well about your past performance.

Mention the phone number and the current designation of that reference in your resume. If possible try and include all the contact details of the references that you have mentioned. Mention their contact address, their cell numbers and landline numbers and also if possible mention their email addresses. This will make the employer feel that you are confident about yourself.
  • Never mention more than three or four references in your resume. Limiting your references to just three will work fine. You can also suggest in your resume that “Reference will be furnished on demand”. This way you can use up the available space in your resume to write any extra information about yourself.
  • Never forget to talk to your references before mentioning their names in your CV. Let them be prepared that they will be receiving a call from your prospective employer. Inform all your references about their inclusion your resume and ask them to be prepared for the call.
