How to Write Letter of Interest
Also known as “prospecting letter”, a letter of interest is a type of cover letter which is written to grab a golden job opportunity. It is an unsolicited letter in which you are required to inform the concerned party about your professional background, abilities, achievements and also need to express your interest in working for the company in a specific field. Whether you are writing it in response to a job opening or just to investigate possible employment opportunity, you must prepare an effective letter of interest. A well-written letter is one that evokes interest in the reader to read your resume and convinces the authority that you are the best applicant.

Instructions
- Before you sit down to write, do your leg work. It is always better to research the background of the company and get yourself familiarized with its products and/or services.
- Find out the name of the concerned person who is responsible for company‘s hiring. Address your letter to his/her attention and use her/his name in the salutation. Avoid using words like “To Whom It May Concern” and “Dear Sir or Madam” because these are now considered outdated.
- Keep your letter of interest very focused. Highlight your achievements and skills through which you think you can bring benefit to the company. Maintain a professional tone in your letter. Omit personal information like hobbies or other interests.

Begin with an impressive introductory paragraph stating the reasons as to why you are interested in pursuing employment with this company. Avoid starting the first sentence with “I”. Also make sure to include the source that prompted you to apply for the vacancy like a classified advertisement, a media article or a referral from an employee. - In the next paragraph(s), add your qualification details. Explain your abilities, strengths, and achievements in a professional, yet convincing way. Do not shy away from illustrating the reasons as to why and how you would be an asset to the company. Keep your letter free from strings of abbreviated credentials. If you need to use them include them in your resume that you will enclose with the letter. Refer the reader(s) to your enclosed reference page and also to any other enclosures (such as letters of recommendation).
- In your final paragraph, make sure to thank the concerned person for devoting his/her time in considering you as a new employee. Request him/her for an immediate response and be sure to let the individual know how to contact you.

- Your letter of interest as well as resume should have ample information to be able to stand as independent documents.
