An important section of any piece of academic research or writing, a bibliography is also referred to as Works Cited page. It serves two purposes- you acknowledge the research and ideas of others and allow the readers to verify your research or find more info.

There are several ways of writing a bibliography or a reference section. If you wish to write a bibliography but do not know the right method, then following instructions will help you to write one. These steps illustrate a standard method of bibliography writing that is universally accepted.

Instructions for writing bibliography

  1. Allot a separate page at the end of the research project for the reference section details. At the top of the page name it as either “Bibliography” or “Works Cited.” This will help the reader to understand the relevancy of the page. How to Write Bibliography
  2. Create an alphabetized list of all the sources used, based on the authors last name. If the source you are using includes two or more authors, then use the last name of the author listed first on the title page. In case your source does not list an author, then use the first word of the title to alphabetize the work.
  3. For every source, that has an author’s last name and first initials, insert a comma separating the names and initials and periods after the initials. For example Robert, S.A.
  4. State the date in parentheses, with a period following the closing parenthesis. Ex. (2005).
  5. Mention the name of the book followed by a period. The book’s name is usually written in italics. If you want you can also highlight it by underlining the book title.
  6. Mention the name of an article in place of a book title. Cite the article name in quotation marks. Also write the name of the magazine or journal from which it has been derived. Italicize or underline it to make it more prominent. Add a volume number, if required.
  7. Do not forget to mention the name of the place or city in which it was published. The city name should be followed by a colon.
  8. Also include the name of the publisher, followed by a comma.
  9. Indent all but the first line of every entry (a hanging indent).
  10. Your bibliography or cited works page is done.
  11. Make sure to number your bibliography page when adding numbers to your paper.
