How to Write a Project
A project report is usually presents the background of an experiment/survey/project carried out. It presents the project’s objectives, the methods used to achieve them and the results of the project. The writer of the project report can also present his/her personal conclusions and inferences of the project undertaken. Just like we write any other reports, a project report is also formatted in similar fashion. It has the headings which clearly communicate the project’s intention. There are several methods of writing a project report. Let us discuss about one particular method in the points given below:
- You have to first create a cover page of the project report mentioning the title. In the next page write down the table of contents and the abstract. Remember that the title of the project report should give its readers an idea about the scope and area of the project.
- Keep the reader and the extent of reader’s knowledge in mind while writing the project report. For example if you are writing a project report on the astronomy subject but the reader of your report is not too knowledgeable on the matters of astronomy and universe, then try and avoid using too many technical terms which might confuse the reader. Make the project report reader friendly.
- There will be an introduction part in the project report. You can include here the scope of the project, its results and objectives in this section. Here you can also write down about your own contribution towards the project.
- You can also include the research that you have undertaken for writing the project report in this introductory section. Incase the research part is too extensive
then include it in the background section. - Write down about the methods that you have undertaken to successfully accomplish the objectives of the report. As these methods have already been finished, you have to mention them in past tense.
- Write down the results of the project. You can also use a separate section for mentioning the results in your report. The results of any project generally include the explanation of the results that you have given, noting trends, comparison of results with the standard theories, analysis of uncertainties, mentioning the possibilities of faulty interpretation, evaluation of limitations of the project results and discussing the assumptions taken while completing the project.
- Now you shall have to mention the conclusion of the project report. A conclusion can be a well written summary of the total report. You can also suggest the implications of the results of the project. Under the conclusion heading you can write down the reference names of people and places used during your project.
- You can also include a recommendation heading for proposing suggestions from the readers about any actions which are to be taken based on the project report’s results or whether any additional research or work is necessary to gain some more expertise on the topic.
- Mention the report abstract in two paragraphs which is just a summary of the contents of the report. This is usually the first section of the report and so it is required that you keep it more general than the conclusion section of the project report.
- The last but not the least section in a project report is the inclusion of references and appendices like charts, graphs or photos.
