How to Write a Play Script How to Write a Play ScriptMany of us dream of writing a script for a play. For many others it is a job. For those who view it as a dream and for those who consider it as a job, it is essential to write a play script which is devoid of any technical flaws. Writing down a script for a play is not that tough as it seems. By just keeping in mind some simple guidelines, one can succeed in becoming a perfect play writer. The guidelines are as follows:

  • The first page of the script is the title of the play. Using bold fonts you have to write down the title of the play towards the center of the page. Remember to write the title inside quotation marks. Using the same fonts, write down the name of the author of the play in the next line. However, you do not have to write the name of the author in bold. Just use the same font size. Write down your communication address or your contact information in the right hand corner of the page. However, do not write your name here as it is already mentioned above. Incase the play’s copyright has been registered, then mention its registration details in the lower left hand corner. Make sure it is towards the left margin.
  • In the next page, write down all the names of the character roles of the play. The next page will also have the title of the play inside quotation marks and also the name of the author towards the center of the page. After having written down the name of the play, leave a blank line and proceed to mention the names of the characters and their descriptions. Write the names of the characters in capital letters along the left margin. You also need to tab over a few times to add the descriptions of the characters in the play. However, you have to keep in mind that the descriptions are even with the next line of character descriptions. Incase your play has any extra characters; you can mention their names and descriptions at the bottom of the page.   • Turn on to the next page and also on the following pages, type in the act and scenes that are going to follow. You have to type the act and the scenes at the top of the page. After having mentioned that, you have to leave a blank line and on the left margin write down “setting”. Remember that the word “setting” is to be typed in capital and a colon is to be inserted after it. After that you have to explain the setting description next to it by tabbing 4 inches from the left of the screen. Click the space bar twice and below the setting description is the explanation of “at rise”. “At rise” explanation means what happens after the curtain goes up in a stage.
  • Type in character names in capital followed by a colon. You have to write the dialogue of the character by tabbing around 4 inches from the page. If you want to mention any stage directions or notes, then you have to do so by typing them inside parenthesis and in italics.
  • After a particular scene ends, you have to mention the “curtain” designation at the bottom of the page below the scene. You also have to type it in capital and inside parenthesis. Just below that, double spaced is the mention of “End of scene” or “End of act”.
