There are some topics that might invoke controversy or political unrest and therefore it is advised to discuss the topic with your teacher before starting to research on it. Try and avoid topics that are too technical or specialized.

2. Finding Information

The internet nowadays is almost considered as a virtual library. There is nothing in this whole wide world which does not find a mention in the web. It is therefore advised to surf the net thoroughly for information pertaining to the topic you have chosen for your research paper. There are many online search engines available on the internet that helps a lot in collecting information about a particular topic. Even online encyclopedias like Britannica have proved themselves to be very popular among research paper writers. Apart from the internet, one can also gather authentic information from government agencies, public libraries, university libraries, newspapers and journals etc. Remember that as you gather information; make sure to jot down the full bibliographical information. The bibliographical information shall be needed by you to be mentioned at the end of your research paper.

3. Thesis statement

The thesis statement of your research paper should be described in just one line. Make sure that you put in some much needed critical thinking before deciding on the thesis statement. This is the statement that describes your belief about the particular topic you have chosen for your research paper. The paper will include both sides of the argument but your thesis statement must make an impact on the reader so as to know about your personal viewpoint about the topic.

4. Outline of the paper

This step deals with the making of a tentative outline for your research paper. However make sure that all points mentioned in the outline are related and connected with the main topic that you have chosen. Outlining the major points in the body of the paper gives you an idea about the topic and the organization of its contents. Any typical outline consists of the following steps:

Whether the paper is a report, a review, a comparison or an analysis
Major points that are covered in your paper

Body: Presentation of the arguments that support your thesis statement
