How to Write a Eulogy

How to Write a Eulogy How to Write a EulogyWriting a eulogy should be done with passionate feelings and an emotional heart for an extremely loved person. When this person who was very close to you passes away, you can give a parting speech in remembrance of his life. There are many ways in which you can find out how to write a eulogy but the writing should always have anecdotes of his life, his life history, his favorite collection of songs and scriptures. You can give details about his work and achievements too if you want to. It is basically the life history of the deceased person portrayed by a person very close to him. While writing a eulogy, the following points can be kept in mind.

  1. Understand the gravity of the situation. If you are chosen to present the eulogy, then it shows how close you were to the person. You have the responsibility of reminding the people in the invitee list about the life of the deceased person and his love for the simple things in life.
  2. You can include your own memories with him. Delve on the relationship that you shared with him and the small little things which brought you together. There maybe things about him which you miss today.
  3. You may not always be informed about the entire life of the deceased. Try to glean information about his life from his family members and close friends. His family will be able to tell you personal information like his birth date, about his relations, his career, hobbies and his personal achievements.
  4. After getting the required information, you should arrange them in a proper manner so that you can easily access what you want. You can store them in a computer and sort them out according to the way you are going to present it. It is good if you can be serious and also include humor in the middle to add some respite to a gloomy day.
  5. Don’t write the speech as if you are going to present it in the form of a book. Try to use a conversational tone so that the audience connects to you. It is much more interesting when you can arrest the attention of your audience for a long time. If the eulogy is written from your heart, then the audience will listen with rapt attention.
  6. Write a rough draft of your speech. You will want to change some lines and so you can keep doing this until you are satisfied that you have the final version. If you like, you can also take the help of your well wishers who can guide you about what to write and what to leave out. Keep making revisions until you are ready.
  7. Rehearsing the eulogy is important. You don’t have to remember it all but you should be familiar with the flow. Make notes or a final copy which you can refer to while giving the speech.
  8. The final copy of the eulogy you are going to deliver can be a hand written one, a printed paper or your computer. The best way out is to use printed and numbered pages for easy reference.
  9. When you finally deliver the eulogy, remember the dearest person you have written about and speak with a natural love for him. You will find the words flowing out and your eulogy will be a success.

If you break down and cry while speaking, it is perfectly alright and you can continue after regaining your composure. Say the eulogy with all your heart and you will find happiness filling your heart at having done so great a job.
