  1. Incase the board you are using is new and unwaxed; you will have to choose an ordinary base wax as the first wax. But if the board is used, then you will have to remove the old wax with a wax comb and then rub it off with a towel. After the old wax gets removed totally, apply a base wax to the board.
  2. For choosing the best kind of wax for your board, you will have to know everything about the kind of water that you would be surfing in. Choose a tropical wax if the temperature of the water is around 68 degrees or more. But if you have applied tropical wax on your board and are about to surf in cold water, then there are high chances of slipping.
  3. If the water that you have chosen to surf on is a bit cooler than the tropical climate, then it is best to apply a warm wax on your surfboard. Warm wax is generally softer than tropical wax.   4. If the water temperature is cooler i.e. around 60 to 68 F, then it is recommended to use a temperate wax or a cool wax.
  5. Incase, you are going to surf in cold water, then you should use the winter wax or the cold wax. Cold wax is the softest wax for surfboards. This helps in giving a fine grip in the chilled waters!

So, choosing the right kind of wax for your surfboard can ensure you a safe surfing in the waters and prevent you from slipping and sliding. But how do we wax a surfboard? Let us catch a glimpse of the method of waxing a surfboard.

  • Begin by applying a base coat of wax to the board. It is better if done in a circular motion. Continue with this process until there is a thin layer on the top.
  • Take a wax comb. Using its toothed end, start raking it across the layer of wax. After this, apply another layer of wax. Repeat this process of adding a layer of wax and then combing over it for 2 or 3 times.
  • This process will create bumps on the board. These bumps and the stickiness of the wax are the things which will prevent you from falling off the board.
  • When you hit the beach, remember to take a little bit of sand and rub it over the wax. This will increase the bumpiness of the surfboard and shall help you in sticking to the board.
