First of all, you need to bring your boat ashore and keep it in a raised position possibly over blocks, so that you can examine and paint underneath the boat. You can also keep it on a trailer. Give your boat a bath with clean and fresh water and wait for it to dry out completely.
Antifouling paint has to be chosen with great deliberation. You need to buy a paint which is suitable for the type of water the boat is used on. Paint will vary for fresh or sea water and also for the type of boat and the type of hull. If you are not very careful, you may have to do the work all over again.
There are quite a few things you will require to do the painting. Purchase a small paint roller and tray, other rollers for emulsion paint, rubber gloves, latex gloves, dust mask, goggles, sanding paper, paint brushes and masking tape. While doing the job, it is advisable to wear old clothes. You need to buy the required antifouling paint for the different areas of the boat along with thinners. You will also need stirring stick, screwdriver, bucket, a dustpan brush and paint scraper.
Before you start painting, make a close scrutiny of the state of the boat. Clean off the marine stuff and remove flaking paint. See if the boat needs any kind of repair. Use a wet sanding paper to remove any imperfections on the boat.
After repairing the damage and peeling off the old paint, give the boat another bath in fresh water. Use a bucket of water and a dustpan type brush. You can also use a power washer.
Make sure that the boat is dry and then apply masking tape to separate the antifouling paint areas from the upper part. You have to remove this tape after painting.
Use a small roller and tray to start applying the antifouling paint. You can choose to apply one or two coast of paint. Check the instructions to see how much time you must wait before releasing the boat into the water again. If you want to paint propellers and outdrives, you have to use a different type of antifouling paint.
If there are some parts you could not paint because of the blocks and props on which the boat was resting, you can get it done just while preparing to release your boat into the water.
Your boat is now ready to last you another season in the water. You will surely feel happy with the effort and also elated to see your boat dazzle in the water.
