How to Trace a Drawing

How to Trace a Drawing How to Trace a DrawingWhen you feel you want to draw – your simple lines go way too much out of the mark. The best solution to this problem is to practice the drawing part of it and then you soon can become an artist with straight lines and proper curves. If you want to start your journey – start with tracing good drawings for the conception and confidence.

  1. You first need to collect the things that will help you with tracing the picture that you want to start with. It can be a drawing of another artist or a picture offhand selected from a stock of good pictures. You will also need a small but sharp pencil to trace. It must be sharpened to a narrow point. You will also need a good eraser to erase something if required and a tracing paper.
  2. You have to put the tracing paper on the picture or drawing that you have selected and then start outlining the drawing on the tracing paper. Select the pencil with black lead so that the outline is dark.
  3. You can also use a light table to trace the picture. If you have a glass table then tracing is easier. Flash a table lamp from the bottom of the table towards the surface. Put the drawing on the surface of the table and the lamp thus is set to focus the light from under the table and then put the tracing paper over the drawing to trace the outline.
  4. You must select a drawing to trace for practice. The picture will have lines merged and the drawing will have proper outlines to trace. If you trace the drawing it will also give you idea of the way to draw the lines but pictures are from a different mode and will not help you much. The lines with different type of light will be difficult to trace.
  5. You can try tracing using some applications on the computer. You can try applications available online – to use them to make use of different medium like watercolor or oil color and trace the drawing. You can upload the drawing you want – and then open it through the applications and give it a new dimension. You will get different options to choose the element that you need to use.
  6. You may sometimes want to directly trace a drawing from the computer and for this you can hold up the paper and then trace through the lines.
  7. Sometimes you may get out of stock of tracing paper and then you might have to go for another method of tracing. You can place the drawing facing down and then shade the outlines with a pencil. Use a dark pencil so the lines become prominent. Now when you are finished take another white paper and fix it below the drawing. Now start drawing over the original lines of the drawing and the shades of the drawing at the back will trace itself over to the new sheet and give you a good outline of the drawing without the tracing paper.

You must be very careful while tracing so that you do not miss any lines as the alignment will be gone once you take off the tracing paper. The pencil must be dark with a sharpened point. Take notice of the drawing and how the dark and light shades are done – so that you can bring the same effect on to your drawing.
