How to Shade A Tattoo3 How to Shade A TattooWearing different Tattoos on the skin has become a style and youngsters love to add this style statement to their personality. Bombarded with various tattoo designs, you can always offer wider choice to your client to select any sample that goes well with their personality. It can include animal tattoos, flower tattoos, reptile tattoos, alien tattoos, cartoon character tattoos and so on.
Although tattoo designing is not very difficult but the shading technique involved in it is definitely complex. To ensure you achieve a meticulously designed tattoo on the skin that is free from all follies, you need to concentrate and be careful while shading. There are several points that you should keep in mind to get the right quality of shading on a particular tattoo. Following are some of the instructions which when followed carefully can be of great help to you.

Blending of Ink
Besides using the colored inks available in the market, you can always create new colors by blending ready-made inks. With practice, you will come to know how a new colored ink can be created by blending different colors and how dilution of ink can help you to get lighter shades and darker shades.

Making tattoo ink darker: To make a particular color or shade darker, you can add drops of black ink. You can go on increasing the content of black if you want darker shade. However, make sure that you don’t add too much of black at one go, especially if you want a subtle change.tattoo 005 shaded jpg

Making tattoo ink lighter: To bring about lighter effect, drops of white ink should be us

ed. The lighter the shade you want, the more the white ink you require to add. Further, just like

black ink, add the white ink slowly and avoid using too much of white ink at once.
You can also experiment with adding a little distilled water to lighten the inks. This is method is especially used for grey washing a tattoo.

How to add shading effect

  1. Firstly dip the needle in the colored ink. Now if you wish to create a lighter shade to your tattoo, then dip the needle in a little bit of water before piercing it into the skin. It will help the ink stay softer and will also not stick to the skin. It will lighten the ink color and will give the particular tattoo area a shaded effect.
  2. Tilting of needle while piercing can also help creating certain effects. If you tilt the tattoo needle a bit, you will inject the ink at a different angle and this will make that specific area differ from the others.
  3. Properly adjust the needle depth on the tattoo gun. If you wish to create darker shade, the depth of the needle should be more and if lighter effect is required then go for lesser depth. Depending upon the depth you select, the quantity of ink penetration will differ and hence different shading effects will be created.

Precautions

  1. All the tools and surfaces used in the tattooing process should be thoroughly sterilized before you begin.
  2. It is always better to use a new tube of lubricant for each tattoo to prevent spread of any disease or blood contamination.

  1. hello theyre. i am trying to work on tattooing i just got 4 new machines. i have always wanted to tattoo my whole life im 34 and have been a graffiti artist for 12 years.. i only want to know the best way to make light grey ink.please explain thanx

    • hey dude my name is damian and ive been doing tattoos for over 9 years but im not sure if you tattooing out of your house but if so you asked how do you make your shades lighter well it all depends on how your hand is really
but also if you fill the ink cap up with half black and the other half water (sterile) you will get a fine grey wash if you have a really light hand. but when you do grey wash you want to place depth to a tattoo so you would fill your ink cap 60% 0f black and then the rest with water green soap works well for grey wash to but waters cheaper. lol
any way when you depth shade you kinda get a little heavier with you hand but not much but also what helps is regular pratrolem jelly (not the Nursery Jelly) it has to be unscented, place a little bit on the tattoo before you lay you ink in the skin. this helps the skin from being chopped up. any ay dude good luck and if you have any more questions just holler at me at my link: brikkwilkes@yahoo.com

  2. i ment that i am 24..

    • hi Bret, in my opinion, the best way you can get grey wash ink, is either mix it with witch hazel or distilled water. in a ratio of 1 part black to about 5 parts water. test the mixed color with a toothpick and run it on your skin or tissue paper. prepare another bottle of 1 part black to 8 parts water. you will now have one bottle black ink, one bottle grey ink, and another light grey wash. pls note that the mixture given is approximate. it defers from the quality of ink used. hope this helps!

  3. hola llevo 5 meses haciendo tatuajes y no me he atrevido hacer tatuajes con sombras ya que no se como le dije llevo 5 meses quisiera saber con cuales agujas se hacen las sombras

  5. What needles r the best ones to use. On a shadeing ..
Shoud i use the stackg mags or the round kind?

    • Also never be afraid to thin your greywash out as much as needed. Remember you can always go darker but not lighter.

  6. trv round shaders first dere more like a pencil to use dan mags especially wen ur not used to a tat machine concentrate on getting even shades by using a consistent depth and angle of penetration. dere is a wide range of needles available to use but learn basic ones first hope dis helps

  7. I am learning to do tatts with a pro machine. I have only used home made machines made with a cassett motor. I have been doing my best to get my shading blended evenly without dots but for some reason the shade keeps coming out scratchy. Why??? also I m having trouble with my color staying dark (vivid) after it heals. Why??? Well I thank you for your time and have a great day.

  8. Sorry to let you know but if thats your shading on the butterfly tattoo, your shading but it sucks. The shading is too flat, the point of shading is to give your tattoo depth. But you should know that since you have been tattooing for 9 years. I hope your lying about that because if your not maybe tattooing is not for you. Last but not least was that a Round Shader you were using in the video (“WOW 9 years”). I use a 9 double stack needle for a job like that, it works great for me.
That last sentance was for you too SONYP 81 try using MAG needles to shade they work better and might help you with your scratching problem.

FACT: thats y the pro’s call us scratchers.

Dude I dont want to be mean, I only have 2 years and I’m still learning, but I’m not writing post tring to teach people, and if that tattoo is not yours I’m sorry and you should take that picture out. It will hurt your rep.
Once again if it is not your tattoo I’m am VERY VERY SORRY!!!!!!!!!!!!
