Steps to roast a turkey
- You begin with thawing the turkey much before your cooking time. If you buy frozen turkey, it becomes even more important that you thaw the turkey. Some people make the mistake of thawing it in room temperature. But it can also spoil the poultry. You can thaw the turkey inside the refrigerator for getting a tender and softer bird.
- Next step is to brine the poultry. You can brine the turkey for about 6 to 8 hours depending on its size. You can use kosher salt and water to brine the turkey. Some people even use wine, vinegar and garlic to brine.
- Once you have brined and rinses the turkey properly, you are now ready to stuff it. A widely accepted mistake is that you can let the stuffing cook inside the turkey. The stuffing would not cook well in such case and you may over cook or under cook the stuffing in the process. You can however skip this step and keep it to be done once the turkey is roasted and just before you serve it. You can cook the stuffing properly and keep it ready to be put inside the turkey.
- Seasoning the turkey is extremely important. You must do it on all sides both under and above the skin. And you would also have to apply the seasoning to the inside walls as well. You can rub the spices uniformly in the inside of the turkey because you need every part of it to be cherished. You can use your hand or a spatula to apply the seasoning thoroughly.
- Tie the turkey properly before you place it in for roasting.
- Depending on the size of the turkey you would need to set the timer for your oven.
- Place the turkey on the open rack of the oven and put about two table spoons of oil over it to make sure it is roasted in the right crispy way everyone is going to like it.
- If you have medium sized turkey, you would require about 165 degree Fahrenheit heat and let it cook for about 15 to 20 minutes.
- You must keep a meat thermometer at hand to know that your turkey is done when you put it for roasting. Once you check that the inside temperature of the turkey and find that is done, you can take it out.
- Once you see that the turkey has left enough juices on the cooking tray you can stuff it with the stuffing you prepared and cover it with a tin foil to absorb. You can leave it aside for 20 minutes or so to soak in every drop of juices into the meat.
- Now the turkey is ready to be served.
