How to Remove Ceramic Tiles
The removal process of ceramic tiles from a floor is a tough job and the need might arise to hire professionals. However with some cautious preparation and lots of hard work, you can also remove the ceramic tiles from your flooring without hiring any professional hounding you for money! You just have to get the following things ready before starting to remove the tiles from your floor. They are as follows:
- Dust mask
- Goggles and gloves
- Protective clothing
- Plastic sheeting
- Tape
- Chisel and hammer/ power chisel
- Shovel
- Broom
- Dust pan
The process is as follows:
- You will have to begin by preparing the room which needs removal of ceramic tiles. You will have to keep in mind that while removing the tiles from the flooring, a lot of dust will float under doorways and can settle almost anywhere in the room. Therefore you need to tape up plastic sheeting all over doorways and air vents. You can also shove towels under doors. This will prevent dust from drifting and settling under them.

- After preparing the room, you also have to get ready for the task at hand. Cover yourself fully with a full sleeved shirt, long pants, protective shoes, a dust mask, gloves and goggles. This is primarily done because while removing tiles, a lot of tiny ceramic pieces become air borne and therefore you will have to be extra careful by covering and protecting yourself properly.
- Choose a grout seam between any two tiles and start chipping it with a hammer and chisel. You also have the option of choosing a power chisel for this purpose as this task requires a lot of energy and time. You can buy, borrow or rent out the power chisel. It is recommended that if the room is large enough then you should go for a power chisel but if the room is a small one, then the work can be accomplished easily with a hammer and a chisel also. However, it is entirely your personal choice whether to work with a power chisel or not.
- You will have to continue with the chipping process with the tiles, grout and adhesive until all the room is stripped off all its old tiles.
- A major task is to clean up all the removed tiles and dust. As these tiles would be broken, you will have to exert some precaution while cleaning them also. You can use the shovel, broom and dust pan to complete the cleaning process.
- Incase there is any leftover adhesive and grout on the floor, you can scrape and chip them off.
