How to Read Songs

How to Read Songs How to Read SongsSongs are a form of music set in words and a way to let out the feeling within your heart. You sing out when you feel the need to tell something and want that to be told in a very special way. They are almost like poems with a very simple difference. While in poetry there are no limits to the forms in which the words are bound, in case of a song words are strung in rhythm and symmetry with the tune that carries the words to the listener.

Songs are just another way to express oneself in a more musical way and you can appreciate good lyrics if you only know how to read songs. Here are a few tips.

  1. Songs are words set to tunes that reflect the mood of the words and the tune helps in communicating the mood to the listener. When you hear a song play, you tend to create a picture in your mind from the words said and that image is only imprinted deeper with the use of a complimenting melody.
  2. Music is grammatically represented in the form of notations and is generally confined to the three landings of the notes in the upper, middle and the lower scales. The different represent the different set of harmonics and are the basic structure of all music that you will ever hear.
  3. Words are very strong and harsh when spoken commonly and so they need to be broken down to soften and make them more flexible. Words are set to the tune after each syllable of a word is broken down and set against each note to enhance their appeal and effectiveness.
  4. While setting the words with the tune care is taken to keep the rhythm and the flow of the melody intact and not hamper the mood or the feel of the tune. Remember that a badly chosen set of words can severely hamper the appeal of a song and on the other hand, a badly set tune can also end the appeal of a very well written song.
  5. Songs become outstanding if, and when, the tune compliments the words and the words compliment the tune. Nothing can be better than a truly great pairing of excellent writing with a wonderful composition.
  6. Melody is a very abstract form and can easily get etched into your memory easily than the word and you need to be careful with their match if you want to render a true performance as close to the original as possible.
  7. While reading the notations and practicing remember to make note of how the words are matched to each note. Make sure you do not miss the stress that is placed on the breakup of the words with each note and if you can follow the same, you will be as close to the original without much effort.

Once you are done with the perfecting, you can now try and put in some of your ingenuity into the resultant performance and enthrall your audience with your rendition of the masterpiece.
