How to Prepare Fried Green Tomatoes
The green tomatoes are used as an ingredient to make a number of delicious dishes. You can prepare fried green tomatoes by using any of the available recipes. Once you make crispy fried green tomatoes, you can entertain your guests by serving the dish with your favorite dipping sauce or ketchup.
Recipe I
Ingredients
- 6 firm green tomatoes
- kosher Salt
- pepper
- 3/4 cup of all purpose flour
- 3/4 cup of well shaken buttermilk
- dash of hot sauce
- 3/4 cup of yellow cornmeal
- 1/2 cups of panko bread crumbs
- vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- Slice the green tomatoes and keep these aside after seasoning with kosher salt and pepper to your taste.
- Place the all purpose flour on a flat plate by spreading in an even manner.
- Mix the shaken buttermilk and hot sauce by whisking in to a pie plate or shallow bowl.
- Place the corn meal and the panko bread crumbs inside another bowl and mix the ingredients well.
- Now bring in the sliced green tomatoes and pull out a single slice at a time. Coat the tomato slice first in flour by knocking off the excess flour, the in the buttermilk and sauce mixture and finally in the panko bread crumb and cornmeal mixture. Once a tomato slice is coated with these mixtures, transfer it to a baking sheet. Repeat the same procedure till you are done with coating with the remaining green tomato slices.
- Preheat the oven at 200 degrees and spread a second baking sheet covered with paper towels.
- Now add the vegetable oil to a skillet and put it on heat. Fry the processed tomato slices in batches for about 2 minutes per each side. You can remove the fried tomato slices, once the color turns golden brown.
- Transfer the fried tomato slices to the prepared baking sheet and season with salt and pepper to your taste. Keep the cooked tomato slices inside the oven till you serve these to your guests with a dipping sauce of your choice.
Recipe II
Ingredients
- 3 medium, firm green tomatoes
- 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup of milk
- 2 beaten eggs
- 2/3 cup of fine dry bread crumbs or cornmeal
- 1/4 cup of olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1/4 teaspoon of pepper
Instructions
- Use a sharp knife and cut the green tomatoes into slices of 1/2 inches. Sprinkle salt and pepper on the tomato slices for seasoning. Allow the seasoned tomato slices to stand for about 15 minutes.
- Place the all-purpose flour, milk, egg and dry bread crumbs or cornmeal in four separate shallow dishes.
- Add the olive oil to a skillet and make it hot on medium heat. Dip the seasoned green tomato slices into the milk, flour, eggs and the bread crumbs or cornmeal.
- Add a coated tomato to the hot oil and fry one side of the slice. Fry each side of a tomato slice for about 4 to 6 minutes or till it turns brown. Repeat the same procedure and fry the remaining slices of green tomatoes.
- Transfer the fried green tomatoes to a plate and season with salt and pepper to your taste.
