How to Play Rummy
Rummy is a very famous card game that has many notable similarities to Gin rummy. However rummy has fewer rules than Gin rummy that makes it an easier game for kids. Here in the game of rummy you can have more than two players. The most notable difference of rummy from Gin rummy is that here you have to get rid off all your cards first to be the winner of a round of this game. The article that is given below will help you in understanding the game better and will also guide you step by step in how to play it. The things that are required for playing a game of rummy are just a deck of cards and 2 to 6 players. After arranging them, you can focus your attention towards the method of playing rummy that is given below:
- You shall have to begin with the dealing and the setting up of the game. Start with shuffling and then cut the cards. Make sure that you are dealing out the cards one at a time to each of the players. If there are two players in the game, then each of them will get 10 cards. Incase there are three or four players; you shall need to deal out seven cards to each of them. And if there are five or six players in your game of rummy, then deal out six cards to each player.
- Remember to place all the remaining cards that are left after dealing out the cards to the players in a face down pile. This pile is otherwise known as the stock pile. Choose the top most card on the stock pile and turn it over. Place it just beside the stock pile with its face open. This will be the start of a “discard” pile.
- The main objective of rummy is getting rid of your cards by grouping them into melds. Melds are a set of 3 or 4 of a kind or a “run” i.e. you can group 3 or 4 cards in order of the same suit like the 5, 6 and 7 of hearts. Here rummy considers Ace as the lowest card.
-
You shall have to group your matching cards and the beginning of runs together just after your dealer hands you over your set of cards. This is done to make the process of matching up melds easier. - The player to the left of the dealer is the first to play. That player has to choose the top most card from either the stock pile or the discard pile. Incase you find that you are able to make any such melds, you have to lay your cards down in front of you so that all the cards that form the melds are visible. You shall have to discard one of your cards and place it on top of the discard pile face up.
- Now you shall have to place a card onto a meld that is existing (it can be yours or someone else’s). This has to be done when it is your turn and you have a card that matches with the meld. Or it can also happen if you are drawing a card that matches with the meld.
- You shall have to take your turn clockwise around the table and draw a card from the stock pile or the discard pile. You have to make melds and discard a card onto the discard pile by placing that card face up. If you are the first one to discard all your cards then you are the winner of that round.
- All the remaining cards of the players have to be added to give the winner his/her score. Aces are equal to one point, face cards are equal to 10 points and all the other number cards are worth the number that they carry on them.
- The first person to reach a score of 100 wins the game. However you also have a choice of declaring a winner who has won five rounds first.
