The few types of drums that you may learn to play are bass drums, snare drums, the cymbals and the tom toms. The bass drums are the one that are played predominately and the snare drums are used to create the emphasis required for a note. It usually produces something like a hit and shuffle kind of noise. The cymbals are usually placed on a stand on the right of the drummer which he hits with the notes in the music. They create a shuffling jingle that adds to the overall music played.

Steps to help you learn the drums

  • Learn to hold and use the stick to get the required sound: This is important and is always done as the first step towards learning to play drums. You need to learn how to hold the stick properly and hit it on the drum to produce the sound. You can not hold it too weak or too hard, just right enough to play it with ease. Music is all about having fun when you play so do not stiffen yourself when you hold the drum sticks, and do not fret when you are not able to get the notes at the first try itself.
  • Start to play the four notes with the sticks: When you begin you must count the four notes that you need to play with the drums. You can do it with ease. This is where your sense of rhythm comes to play. You can slowly get to the eight notes and then to sixteen notes. You can find easy to understand drums playing notes that come with the Xs that help you beat the drum exactly as it is needed. When you don’t have drums with you, you can even play using a table. Just for a quick tip, you can use a table and say one, two, three, four and start playing to yourself. You need to hit the twos and fours on the table and ones and threes by tapping your feet.
  • Combining the rhythm: Once you are able to play the notes successfully, you can learn to play by combining the rhythm to create the desired music. You can play the way you started learning the notes and start practicing. Soon you can get when you are supposed to hit which drum. You can learn with basic beats and soon progress to the more difficult ones.
