How to Play Cribbage

How to Play Cribbage How to Play CribbageCribbage is one of the very old card games that have its roots in the early 1600’s. The traditional game of cribbage deals with two handed ones. But here we shall be discussing about the more competitive forms of cribbage like the three and four players variations.

Let us first know about the basics of the game of cribbage. The following points will help us in understanding the game and its variations in a better manner:

The basics of cribbage: Cribbage is played with a 52 card deck. The cards are ranked from the king at the highest to the ace in the lowest. A general cribbage board has pegs and holes in it. It also has clearly marked streets that define a particular movement. Every card in the 52 card deck has a numerical value. All the face cards and 10 count as ten. Similarly, aces are counted as one and all other spot cards are counted as the number that is marked on the card. There are several combinations of these cards like straights, runs, pairs, flushes, quads, trips, fifteen’s and go’s. These combinations help in adding up the points which in turn help the player in advancing his pegs on the cribbage board. A usual game of cribbage is set at 121 points. These days there are many books and websites that can help a beginner to gain a strong foothold in the game of cribbage by understanding its basics properly. The most popular and loved version of cribbage is its two player mode.

The deal and cut of three handed cribbage: The players have to draw in for the first deal. This deal will rotate to its left for each successive hand. Instead of the usual 6 cards, here five cards are dealt to each of the players and one card is dealt to the crib. Each player has to drop one card into the crib after sorting their hands. The dealer will own the four card crib and the player who is at the left of the dealer will cut the starter card.

Play of the hand in three handed cribbage: The player to the left of the dealer shall take the opening lead of one card. Here also similar to the traditional game, the cumulative total is not allowed to exceed 31. Whenever a player calls in GO, the immediate next opponent must continue to play if possible. If he does, then the third player also must play. However if the first person cannot play then second player also doesn’t get to play. The Go point is won by that player who plays the last card.

One has to count the hands in order. You have to begin with the player who is to the dealer’s left and continue left to end with crib. Every player has to move his/her pegs. The limit for the game can be set at 61 points for two streets or 121 points for four streets.

The deal and play of four handed partner’s cribbage: The players need to draw for partners and the first deal. Here also five cards are dealt to each player and this is done one at a time. Each player would have to drop in one card in the crib that will go to the dealer for that particular hand. That has to rotate as and when the deal rotates. The rules and play are similar to those of the three handed cribbage game.

Scoring pattern of four handed partner’s cribbage: The total scores that are made by each team have to be added up for a running total. You also have to appoint one player from each side for keeping the score. The longer game involving 121 points is usually preferred by cribbage lovers.
