How to Plaster WallsWhether you are building an entirely new wall or mending a crack plastering a wall makes it strong and long lasting. Plastering a wall is not very difficult; you just need to know what to mix in proportion.

Here’s some quick help on how to plaster walls.

If you are building a new wall

If you are building a new wall, you start by laying the bricks and cement layer. Keep soaking this wall in water by spraying water on it for two to three days.

Now you need to plaster the wall. Firstly mix fine gravel, cement and water. Coat the brick wall with this mix. Make it flat. Once this layer is dry water it for 2 days and let the cement harden well.

Now use a mix of plaster of Paris and cornice adhesive and slight water to plaster the wall. Apply one coat and let it set. Once the coat is dry and hard, start applying another coat of the same mix that you had made. This time make the wall look finished and smooth. You can even use sand paper to polish the walls and give them a smooth glossy look.

Once the plaster is dry, set and smooth you can begin the paint job. Choose the shade you want and paint your newly plastered wall.

If you are building a crack or hole in a wallHow to Plaster Walls

If you want to repair a hole or crack in the wall, the first thing you need to do is tap around it and see if the wall has a hollow drummy sound. If it does then you need to chisel out that part of the wall.

Use a hammer and chisel to break the hollow part. Now clear all the sand and gravel with a wet brush or cloth. Set it aside.

Next begin by adding a brick or if it is an out of shape crack to fit brick use sand, cement and gravel. Fill the gap and let it dry. Spray water on it and let it soak it. Soaking water helps the wall become stronger and harder. This is important because the area underneath has to be repaired so that your entire wall is saved from cracking.

Once the layer had dried and hardened, use a mix of white cement, cornice adhesive and perlite to coat it. The hole will be filled with a bulk and also bond better. It will also give a smooth finish to the wall. Use 60 percent of cornice adhesive and 40% perlite for a god smooth finish. Apply a second coat for absolutely glossy looks.
