How to Paint Mountains
You really do not need to be a technically advanced artist to be able to paint mountains. It is actually easier than it seems. There are some basic rules which need to be followed while painting a mountain. Before we begin learning how to paint a mountain, we need to assemble some essential items. They are:
- A canvas board
- Oil painting medium
- Brushes for painting ( size #6 & #12)
- Oil paints- Prussian blue, black, cadmium yellow medium, alizarin crimson, white and cerulean blue
- A palette/glass plate
- A rug/paper towels
So let us now begin the act of painting mountains!
- Squeeze each color onto the palette and note the name of the color above the dab of paint. This is important because colors can get confusing if one is not attentive enough. For example Prussian blue has high chances of being mistaken as black.
- Now sketch the mountains on the canvas.

- Use the #12 brush to lay the mixture that you have made in the palette. Make sure to sweep the brush downwards from top of the mountain. Pick up black, Prussian blue and alizarin crimson to create some shades of shadows on the peaks. You can also create some valleys on the lower peaks of the mountains.
- Remember that the bottom of the mountains should fade into darkness and it should meet the shadowed side and has to be lighter on the other side.
- Now use the #6 brush and with white and Prussian blue colors, add highlights to the top of the mountains by giving short strokes. After this, wipe off the brush with a towel and use the white and cadmium yellow colors. Make sure that there is not much yellow on the brush. For the final effect, just over stroke the highlights with this mixture.
