How to Paint Furniture How to Paint FurnitureIf you want to give a brand new look to your old furniture piece, then nothing can be better than applying a fresh coat of paint to it. Painting furniture involves sanding, priming and painting. Once you master the skills, you won’t need to spend huge amount on new furniture for updating your home décor. So, are you getting tempted to paint your furniture? Well, here are some useful instructions that will help you get the work done:

Instructions

  1. Firstly, select the right place for the painting process. It is always good to work in a well ventilated area. This is because paint fumes are generally toxic and hence can be harmful when collected in an enclosed space. Go for open garage or other open space where there is sufficient ventilation.
  2. Place the furniture at the desired spot and start removing the parts that is not required to be painted. Take off all the hardware parts with the help of the screwdriver. Make sure to keep the screws in the right place so that they are not lost. Put all the hardware in a plastic bag.
  3. Now clean the furniture properly to remove all dust particles. Use a damp piece of cloth to remove any unwanted dirt or dust from the furniture piece. Also look out for any rough spots on the furniture and sand them with a light sand paper. This will ensure smooth and fine finish with no marks of bumps or peeling paint.

  5. For achieving best finish, use a small roller for untextured surfaces. Rollers are better alternatives for paint brushes because they do not leave behind any brush stroke marks on the surface. Moreover, it is easy to use them; you can quickly do the job.
  6. Carefully roll the paint onto the furniture piece with even strokes. Do not apply thicker paint coats. It is always better to do several light finishes than one thick finish. After applying each coat allow it to dry properly and then go for the next coat of paint.
  7. Finally, when the desired color shade is achieved, allow the furniture plenty of time to dry. It will take nearly a week’s time to dry. Though paint will appear dry after some time it will remain somewhat tacky, hence do not place anything on it for at least a week. Fix the hardware after the paint has dried.
