Children generally love having their faces painted in various designs, right from birds, cats and dogs to ghosts, wizards and scare -crows. Apart from kids, many adults also enjoy getting their faces painted on a variety of occasions.

Face painting can turn out to be quite lucrative too, if you want to make it your profession. For the amateurs, simple face paints on kids will help you perfect the art, before you graduate to the more fancy ones. If you are just starting out and want to know some handy tips on how to paint face, the easy instructions given below should serve as your ready guide.

  1. You will first need to stock up on the basic requisites before you commence the face painting session.
  • Face paints that are safe and FDA approved. Acrylic paints, watercolors and pencils should not used on the skin despite being marked as non-toxic.
  • Good quality round brushes and sponges
  • Mixing plate or color palette
  • Few mugs of clean water for rinsing the brushes and sponges
  • Mirror
  • Tissues, wipes and towels
  • Hair bands or clips to keep the hair away from face
  • Design board to help people select the designs they want on their face

2. Ensure that the person getting the face paint done suffers from no skin allergies or infections, especially if you are painting children. Refrain from painting people with very sensitive skin even if the face paints are of a very trusted quality.

3. Select the design you are going to paint. Make sure that you have practiced the art beforehand so that you are comfortable whilst painting it. If you are new to face painting, it would be better to perfect a few designs first and offer only those to your customers.

4. Once the design to be painted has been finalized, you can start painting directly onto clean dry skin. Use a damp sponge to apply the base color first. Make sure you squeeze the sponge of excess water. Once the base color dries, finish the outlines with a fine brush.

5. Apply the second color only after the first one has dried up or they will tend to mix up. It is advisable to first apply a thin layer, allow it to dry and then apply the second coat. A thick coat of paint will be prone to crack more readily.

6. Face painting stencils come in various shapes and designs and are a good option if you are not very confident of painting freehand. Glitter can also be used to heighten the effect, but they are generally hard to get rid off.

7. Kids need to be instructed to allow the paint some drying time, before they can go about touching their newfound faces in glee. Keep a mirror handy to display the result once done.

Tips:

  • While mixing colors in the palette, fill in the colors slowly to judge their effect. Black should not be mixed with other colors, as it tends to smudge off easily.
  • Face painting when done for long periods of time can put undue stress on the back muscles. Make sure that you have a comfortable chair for yourself whilst painting and that you take adequate stretch breaks. If you are painting kids, get them seated on a high stool.
