- This article can make you understand the painting process of kitchen cabinets that are made of wood and also for those cabinets which have been painted previously. As wood cabinets take up a long time for the painting process therefore it is advised that you do this at home or else painters can charge you very high.
- You shall have to start by taking off the cabinet door from the base. Remember here that the base of a cabinet is that portion which is attached to the wall. In the mean time you have to make sure that you keep all the hardware in a sandwich bag and then label it as #1 so that you do not confuse with the different parts later on. Repeat this process for all the doors and the base also. You can write over them with a pen. You can always paint over them when the painting gets over.
-
The next step will involve scrapping off any bumps that might be present on the surface of the cabinet or its base. You shall also have to wipe off any dirt off the surfaces. Generally all wooden cabinets have a clear coat of varnish on them so you will have to sand it off completely. This can be done by using an electric sander. However if you are planning to sand off the surface of a previously painted cabinet then it is recommended to go for manual sanding. - Notice for any areas that might have some flaws, bumps, craters or holes. After locating them, apply spackle on those areas. Incase you find an area which has some unsealed caulk then here also you have to apply the spackle. However be very sure that the spackle has completely dried off before you proceed to re-sand the surface. You shall have to re-sand the surface to achieve a smooth touch.
- Clean up all the dust that has accumulated because of the sanding that you have done. Take up a damp towel and use it to clean the dust. You can also use a vacuum cleaner for this purpose. Be very careful to remove all dust from the base and the cabinets.
- Apply a coat of primer to the base and one side of the cabinets. As this will dry off quickly, you can turn it over and repeat the application on the other side of the doors. You shall have to apply 4 to 5 coats of primer for a wooden cabinet whereas for a previously painted cabinet, you just have to apply one coat.
- Now just sand the primed surface lightly and then clean away all the gathered dust. However undertake the sanding process after the primer has dried off completely. Now apply one coat of paint to the base and to one side of the doors. For wooden cabinets you have to apply 4 or 5 coats whereas for previously painted cabinets apply 2 coats of paint. However you have to wait for each coat to dry before painting. Allow the cabinets to dry off for a day or two.
