How to Paint Aluminum

- Utility bucket
- Powdered soap
- Cleaning clothes
- Water
- Oil based metal priming paint
- Paint thinner
- Paint brush
- Acrylic latex exterior paint
- Painter’s tape
The method of painting on aluminum window frames is as given below:
- You have to begin by washing all the window frames with powdered soap and water. Mix these two ingredients and use a cleaning cloth to wipe off all the dirt and debris off the surface of the aluminum window frames. This process is required to be done before the application of primer or paint. Allow the frames to dry off completely.
- Now you have to mix 1 pint of paint thinner to 1 gallon of oil based metal primer. However before applying the primer, you have to cover all those areas with painter’s tape on which you do not wish to paint. Use a paint brush to apply a coat of primer. This primer should be left to dry off completely the whole night.
- Within 48 hours of the application of primer, you shall have to paint the aluminum window frames with acrylic latex exterior house paint. You might need to use drop cloths to prevent spilling of paint.
- Let this paint dry off the surface. After the paint has dried off completely you can remove the painter’s tape. Your window frames are shining as new!
Now let us turn our attention towards the painting of aluminum siding. Aluminum sidings have the habit of getting weathered and dull after a few years. You do not have to think about replacing your old siding with a new one if you can simply invest some time towards painting it. This will ensure that your siding looks brand new and stays that way for years to come. Let us gather the things that are required for this purpose:
- Paint thinner
- Oil based metal priming paint

- Hose
- Medium bristle scrub brush
- Pole sander
- Acrylic latex exterior house paint
- Paint brush
- Rollers
- Ladder
- Detergent based soap
The method of painting aluminum siding is as mentioned below:
- The first step in the painting process of aluminum siding is to clean it. You can do this with the help of a pole sander. You can also attach a nylon scrubbing pad to the sander and you can easily clean the siding quickly. Just make sure that the entire siding is cleaned properly. Now you need to rinse it nicely. Continue the process of rinsing until the water runs off without any soap or color. Allow the siding to dry off completely for around 3 to 4 days.
- You shall have to thin the oil based metal primer with the help of paint thinner. Remember to use one quart of thinner for every gallon of paint. Now apply the primer over the siding and allow it to dry off. Primer extends the life of the paint on it. After the primer had dried off you can apply the paint with the help of a brush or an airless sprayer.
- Your siding now looks bright and new!
