Well, giving a professional-looking finish to your old bike is not that difficult. It’s just a matter of getting the basic idea of painting it.

  • First you need to collect the necessary equipment required for painting a bike. Make a list of the items before you start your shopping trip and also carefully decide the color that you want on the bike. Blue, black, red, etc are some of the popular colors for a bike. But, you can pick your own color or set of colors to give your bike the look that you will be pleased with. It is also easier to paint a bike with one color throughout. When you use different colors, you need masking which might be a daunting task for the first-timers. The other important items you need to paint a bike are a wire brush, masking tape, sandpaper, rags to wipe the frame, wire or cord to hang the frame of the bike, a face mask to protect your face from coming in contact with paint droplets. If the bike is too old or the rust on it too stubborn, you may require a rust remover.
  • Before you start painting your bike, it’s essential to dismantle the bike for a clean and decent job. Prior to that you need essential mechanical skill to take the parts apart and put them all back again. If you are not sure about the task, it’s better to take help of a mechanic or a friend who has idea of rebuilding a bike. Again, you need to consider if you have right tools to dismantle and assemble the parts. This particular step also allows you to know whether any of your bike parts need replacement. If you are ready with the basic requirements, move on to the next step of painting your bike.

Remove the decals, printed letters or any other promotional bits to clear the surface. If they don’t come off with sand paper, you can use different chemicals to get it done. But, don’t forget to take necessary precautions while using the products. Sometimes, if you can’t remove the old paint with sandpapers, you can also use a paint remover. Remove the paint properly to get a frame of bare metal.
  • Once you are done with removing the old paint completely from the frame, it’s time to clean the frame. After cleaning the dust with a brush from the corners of the frame, use soapy water or simply clean water to rinse the frame off. Pet the frame dry or use a blower to dry the remaining water. Hang the bike up from the ceiling or on a stand for the next step of painting the bike.
  • Once, the frame is completely dry, apply some coats of primer to prepare the frame for the paint. Before applying the coats of paints, it’s crucial to read the instructions on the packs. Different brands of spray paints have different requirements for recoating, rubbing back and waiting time between the coats. Start with light coat of paint on a patch of the frame using an adjustable nozzle. Remember that use of facemask will protect you from breathing in paint droplets. If you are satisfied with your work on the patch, get started with applying light coats all over the frame. Leave your frame hanging till you finish applying all coats of paint. If you don’t want to paint any particular area on the bike, you can use masking tape to cover up that area.
  • While painting the bike make sure that you don’t spray too much of paint. Otherwise, the paint will get accumulated in the lower part of the frame. Don’t hurry to finish the painting work; but leave recommended time between the coats. Also don’t touch the frame until it is completely dry. A good practice is to apply more number of light coats than fewer thick coats.
  • Remove the masking tapes carefully and reattach the accessories of the bike. Now, you are ready with your bike to impress your friends. If you want a fashionable look for your bike, you can opt for different decals and other ornamental items.
