There are a few things that you would require before you settle down to preparing your hoodie. First you need to decide if you want to make a full sleeve hoodie or a sleeveless one. The basic requirements are a piece of fabric or two (big enough for making a loose full sleeve t-shirt and the hood; you can use two different types for the body and the borders), some fabric for the lining (you would need to make the hood little heavier than the rest of the body), some paper, a pair of scissors, a pencil, an eraser, some matching thread, a zipper and finally a sewing machine. You can easily get these things in a general store and you are ready to take your first sewing lesson with a hoodie.

You must remember that a hoodie is a little bigger version of a t-shirt. So, while cutting the fabric for your hoodie, you may keep one at your side to just check out that you are doing it right.
Fold the sleeves of the t-shirt and keep it on a paper. And mark the shape of the t-shirt on the paper and make sure, you mark at least one inch extra that the usual size.
Make the shape more like the shoulders and neck of the t-shirt and cut out the paper sample. Place the paper cut outs on the fabric and cut and cut it out with the exact shape leaving about half inch for the stitch. Fold the front piece fabric from the middle and cut it out into two pieces. After cutting you would see, you have five pieces, i.e., two front pieces, one for the back, and two for the sleeves.
You can now stitch and make sure, you follow a patter of sewing the front piece to the back piece first.
Add the sleeves carefully. Cut the cuffs out from the other fabric that you kept out and add it to the sleeves.
Cut out the shapes for pockets. Add the pockets to the front and back pieces. You can choose where to have the pockets, in the front or at each side.
You can add the zipper to it and it would come to the level of your neck.
For the hood, you can check your old hoodie and see how the shapes have been cut. Cut the main fabric and the lining in the same shape. Now sew the main fabric and the lining together. You must keep the lining in the inner side and sew the hood to the t-shirt you just stitched.
Place the extra linings and design your logo or make some symbols with thread and place it on the hoodie. You can also add some embellishments to make it shine out.
