How to Make Your Own Flag

This article will deal with the method of making a garden flag that can add lots of fun to your yard. Gradually when you start making several garden flags, you can then switch those flags with seasons or holidays in your garden! Making a flag on your own helps you in personalizing it by adding certain personal touches that you just cannot get in any other flag which is purchased from the market. So let us first arrange the things that are needed for making a flag. They are as follows:

2 yards nylon fabric for background
¼ yard nylon scraps for design
Sewing notions
Sewing machine
Tape measure

Let us now start making a flag for your garden by following the step by step guide given below:

Start by cutting the nylon fabric in measures of 3 feet 2 inches by 5 feet 4 ½ inches that forms a background flag piece.
Now turn them both under 5 foot edges and ¼ inch and pin them to secure. These edges have to be hemmed with a straight topstitch that goes along both edges.
Now turn them again under one 3 foot edge and ¼ inch and then turn the edge again to secure it with pins. This edge also has to be hemmed using a straight topstitch that goes along the entire edge.
The remaining portion has to be turned under 3 foot edge and ¼ inch. Now you have to press this edge 3 inches downwards towards the flag.
This edge has to be secured using pins and then you will have to sew the edge that goes along the fold which will create casing for the flagpole.
Then you shall have to decide and determine about the design and pictures that you want to incorporate in your flag. You can make these pictures intricate or simple depending upon your own choice. However you need to keep in mind that this picture or design that you want has to be drawn and cut out from the scrap nylon fabric.
The next step is drawing the designs on a paper and then cutting out the patterns from there. Using these paper patterns you will have to cut out design patterns from the nylon fabric. Now you have to position these cut out patterns of designs on the flag and then use pins to secure them to place.
After having secured them in place you can sew the design pieces into the flag by using zigzag stitches. Be very sure to work carefully and slowly while stitching the design pieces into the flag as there are chances of the flag shifting in place while you are sewing.

After having made your very own garden flag, let us move on to find out the making of a pirate flag. Pirate flags are basically designed in such a manner so as to instill fear. Therefore you need to decide on the type of picture that you want on your flag. You can choose the designs of skulls, cutlasses or skeletons. You can also make a design which shows a hanging skeleton with a frown or a sword which is piercing a skeleton. Basically the design should be such that it describes your attitude to a certain extent. The method given below describes the making of a pirate flag:

Take a black or any single color pre-made flag. Incase the color of the pre-made flag is not black then you can dye the same. It is advised that you use pre-made flags.
Now you have to outline the chosen design on the flag with a pencil. Make sure that you outline the design very lightly.
Place a cardboard under the flag and then paint the chosen design that you have outlined on the flag. You can choose red color also.
Now by using scissors, you can give your flag a worn look by shredding its ends. You can also use a dowel rod for a make shift mast and some strings of nylon for hanging the flag.
Your pirate flag is ready!
