How to Make Sugar Cubes
Serving sugar cubes with tea or coffee to your guests can certainly leave them impressed. Though sugar cubes increase the visual appeal of the tea or coffee that you are serving, they can turn out to be quite a costly affair if purchased from the grocery store. One can easily save a lot of bucks by trying to prepare petite and sweet sugar cubes in the comfort of one’s home. Since the process of making sugar cubes doesn’t involve the use of any sharp kitchen objects, you can make your children take part in its making. Making of sugar cubes at home can be a very relaxing hobby and can also increase your food preparation knowledge. In this article we shall know the making of white sugar cubes as well as the colored ones. There are certain things that are needed for making white sugar cubes at home. They are as follows:
- 2 cups of sugar
- A small ice cube tray
- 2 tbsp of hot water
- A bowl
- Fork and spoon
After having assembled the above mentioned things, we can proceed with the making of sugar cubes at home. The below mentioned step by step guide can help you understand the process in a better manner:
- Take the mixing bowl and add in it the sugar and water. Make sure that you use the ingredients in the specified amounts as mentioned in the list above. Combine sugar and water till it attains the form of a mass similar to moist sand. You can combine sugar and water by using a fork.
- Use a spoon to scoop out the sugar mass from the bowl and place it inside the small ice cube tray. Compress the sugar firmly into the molds of the tray by using your fingers. After having done that, turn the ice tray over and gently tap the cubes out.
- Once you have the sugar cubes out of the ice tray, you shall have to dry them on a flat surface. Avoid touching the cubes while they are drying. Your sugar cubes are ready!
You can try to add some vanilla beans to the sugar a day or two before you make the sugar cubes. This will make your sugar cubes smell aromatically and will also lend your tea/coffee an amazing flavor.
Now that we know the process of making plain white sugar cubes, let us experiment a bit by trying to learn the process of making colored sugar cubes. Have a look at the below mentioned points that can guide you through the process of making colored sugar cubes at home:
- You shall have to begin by preheating your oven to about 200 degrees. Pour out white granulated sugar into a measuring cup till it reaches the 2 cup mark. Now from this measuring cup, scoop out 2 tbsp of sugar and add it in a zip lock pouch. Take another cup and measure in it around 4 tsp of food coloring. Use a dropper to take out one drop of this color and add it to the zip lock pouch along with the sugar. Close the pouch.
- After having closed the pouch, use your hands to knead the sugar and the color together so that they mix well. Remember that you can keep on adding drops of food coloring to the pouch till you are satisfied with the intensity of the color. Knead the sugar and the color properly so that they reach a moistened state.
- Take an ice tray and scoop out into its molds the colored sugar from the pouch. You can use your hands to place the sugar inside the molds tightly. Now gently flip the ice tray and tap the cubes out from it slowly.
- Take the colored sugar cubes and place them on a non stick cookie sheet and start baking them for about 5 minutes. You can then allow the colored sugar cubes to cool off before using them.
