- Depending on whether the rice is fresh or has been preserved for a few months, you will need different quantities of water. If the uncooked rice is fresh, then you will need double the quantity of water than the rice. As the rice ages, you will need more water for making the rice. In fact, it is all about practice. You can experiment the first time with 2 parts water to 1 part rice and if you are not successful, you can change the quantity of water used.
- There are many varieties of rice available in the market. They can vary from being coarse to really fine variety with a really heavenly smell. If you want to eat good quality rice, you need to buy the long grained and sweet smelling kind of rice. Measure 1 cup rice and 2 cups water.
- Place the water to boil in the stove. When it starts boiling, wash the rice thoroughly and pour it into the boiling water. The time taken for the water to boil will depend on the amount of rice you want to cook and the water taken. 2 cups water should take about 5 minutes to boil. For cooking large quantities, you will have to wait longer.
- After you put in the rice, cover the pot and lower the flame. Adjust the flame so that the water and rice keep boiling and yet the water does not boil so drastically as to drip out of the pot. The water should be enough so that the rice cooks well without the bottom getting burnt. If the water starts to lessen and the rice is still not cooked, then lower the flame still further and make sure that the rice does not stick to the bottom or get burnt. It should take about 20 minutes for the rice to get cooked. Again, depending on the quality of rice, it might take less or more time.
- Check to see if the water has completely been used up by the rice. If you tilt the pot a little, you can see if there is any water in the bottom or all has been used up. If you feel the rice in your hands now, it should feel soft and there should not be any moisture clinging to it.
- Leave the rice covered and switch off the stove. After allowing it to stand for 10 minutes, ruffle up the contents. This will get rid of any remaining moisture. The rice will now be white and fluffy and soft to eat.
- Now serve the rice along with your favorite curry and enjoy the meal.
