How to Make Potato Au Gratin
Potato au gratin is a delicious French dish which can be prepared in just a few minutes of time by using a simple recipe. The recipe uses the French phrase “au gratin” along with the English term potato and stands for a topping prepared by using ingredients like grated cheese or breadcrumbs along with egg or butter. Some other dishes also use the phrase along with the name of the ingredient like meat, fish, vegetables, and pasta. There are a number of recipes and variations available to prepare the dish with a different flavor and taste. You can easily make the dish by using a sow cooker, microwave, or oven. Further, the dish can be prepared by using the potatoes which are either peeled or unpeeled. Just by spending few minutes, you can prepare and add this delicious dish to different types of meals.
Ingredients
- 4 pounds of Russet potatoes
- 1 large sweet onion
- 1 pound of sharp cheddar cheese
- 8 tablespoons of butter
- 2 cups of heavy cream
- salt and pepper to your taste
Instructions
- You can either get the potatoes peeled or simply wash these really well, before using these to make this dish. While washing the potatoes, check for the eyes (sprouts), discolorations, and bad spots. Use a knife and peel off only the troubled spots.
- Bring in a large casserole dish and grease it properly using some butter or bacon fat.
- Use a sharp knife and slice the potatoes into pieces of a quarter-inch thick. You need not concentrate to give each sliced potatoes piece the exact shape and thickness. Just cut the pieces by keeping in mind the intended size. Shred the onion into small pieces.
- Put these sliced potatoes pieces, shredded onion and cheese inside the casserole dish. First arrange a layer of potatoes, top it with a layer of onion and then place a layer of sharp cheddar cheese. Season these layers with salt and pepper to your taste. Follow the same layering technique till you are run out of the potato pieces.
- Now cut the butter into thin pats and spread the butter evenly across the top layer of potatoes.
- Cover the casserole dish and put it inside an oven or microwave to bake. Set the oven ay 350 degrees and cook the dish for about one hour. While cooking check whether the dish had started thickening up and remove the dish from oven accordingly.
- After removing the dish from oven, you can add the two cups of heavy cream to the baked ingredients. Some variations of the recipe also suggest adding a little bit of flour or cornstarch to the cream before adding it to the baked ingredients. You have to mix the additional ingredients well with the cream before adding. Stir the dish properly for mixing the cream well with the other ingredients. If you are using the cream without adding the thickener, check for the thickness of the dish after the cream is mixed with the other baked ingredients. If you want you can again put the dish in oven and microwave and bake till you get the desired thickness.
