How to Make Play Dough
Making dough is a very good activity for enhancing the motor skills in children. Playing in general improves a child’s skills and senses. And playing with colors can improve a child’s recognition and sensory skills to a great extent. Colored play dough plays a great part in increasing both hand muscles and color recognition skills in children at an early stage of their lives. So why not involve your kid for making colored play dough and unravel the gleam in their eyes? The article given below explains the method of making colored play dough at home.
- Take a large bowl which has the capacity to mix in it all the required ingredients. Add 1 cup of flour and all the rest of the dry ingredients into the bowl. You can involve you kid and ask him/her to add the dry ingredients in the bowl.
- Add ½ cup of salt to the bowl and 3 tbsp of cream of tartar. There is no fixed amount of adding the cream of tartar. There are some recipes wherein you might have to add more than 3 tbsp of cream of tartar. So there is no problem in experimenting with the amount of this particular ingredient.
- Now add 1 cup of water to the large bowl. However if you want the food coloring to be distributed evenly throughout the play dough then you can also mix in the extract to the water first and then add the colored water to the play dough.
- Take your time to mix in the contents of the bowl properly. You can use a wooden spoon also to mix the contents of the bowl or can use your hands rather.
- Your colored play dough is ready. You can use play dough toys and scissors to experiment some more with your homemade play dough.
There are certain things which are supposed to be kept in mind while making colored play dough with your kid. They are as follows:
- If you make your kid add the ingredients to the mixing bowl then you are helping a lot in enhancing his/her understanding of measurements and sequencing.
- If you are having trouble in finding cream of tartar in your grocery store, have a peep in its spices section.
- You can also add a scent that corresponds to the food coloring of the play dough. This can increase the olfactory senses of your child. For example: yellow with lemon extract, green with mint extract, orange with orange extract etc.
- Try and sit with your kid to make play dough at home as many times in a week as possible. This will strengthen his hand muscles and it’s also fun and inexpensive!
- You can also make oil free play dough by mixing 1 cup of flour with half a cup of salt and half a cup of water. Mix all of them together and then add food coloring to it. Knead the dough nicely until you can make it a ball. You can store this dough in an air tight container.
