How to Make Organic Soap
In this article we shall learn about the method of making organic soaps in the comfort of our homes. First we shall deal with the making of organic soap by using lye and then we will know about the process of making organic soap without using lye.
Organic soap (by using lye)
The things that are required for making this are as mentioned below:
- ¼ cup of cold water

- A stainless steel container
- Wooden spoon
- A pan or a pot
- 1/3 cup of organic lard
- ½ oz lye
- 1/8 cup of coconut oil
- Molds
After having gathered all the necessary things mentioned above, we can proceed with the process of making organic soap by using lye. The step by step guide given below can help you in this regard:
- You shall have to begin by pouring in the cold water into the stainless steel container. Now use the stipulated amount of lye and add it to the container. Keep on stirring the contents with a wooden spoon. Now the lard has to be added. Lard is nothing but pork fat that is clean and has not been injected with hormones. Before adding the lard to the container, you shall have to bring it to the desired consistency so that it becomes easy to pour it inside the container. This can be done by warming the lard in another pot or pan and then bringing it to the desired texture.
- Be careful to stir the contents of the container slowly while adding the lard to the lye and water mixture. You shall notice that after some time of stirring the mixture, it has started to become thick. Just at this point of time, you would have to add coconut oil to the mixture and keep on stirring.
- Now you have pour out the mixture into the soap molds and then cover them with wrap. These molds have to be allowed to sit through the night. Next day the soaps can be taken out from the molds and kept on a wire rack to dry off at least for about two weeks before using.
Organic soap (without using lye)
The things that are required for making organic soaps at home without using lye are as mentioned below:
- Glycerin soap
- Soap molds
- Fresh/dried herbs or petals
- Cheesecloth
After having gathered the above mentioned items, let us carry forward with the preparation method of organic soaps (without using lye). The step by step guide given below can help you in a better manner in this regard:
- Begin by melting the soap by placing it on a saucepan over medium heat. You have to be very careful while melting soap over low heat till it becomes completely liquid. Now is the turn of adding fragrance. Take a cheesecloth and place in it some chopped up fresh herbs and some fresh flower petals. You can also use dried herbs here. Tie up the cheesecloth securely and place it in the liquid melted soap. Allow the mixture to simmer for about 15 to 20 minutes on low heat. After the stipulated time, remove the cheesecloth bundle from the mixture.
- Pour out the soap mixture into the molds and allow them to settle for some time and cool off. After some time, take them out and dry on a wire rack. Your lye free organic soap is ready!
