How to Make Moonshine
Moonshine is a colloquial word for homemade alcohol that became very popular during the period when alcohol was forbidden. It was in those days of prohibition that people who wanted to drink started preparing their own alcohol from ingredients that were easily available. Though even today moonshine production is prohibited, one can definitely know how it was made just to gain information and not for practical purpose. Following
are the steps that went into its preparation:
Ingredients required
- Cornmeal
- Water
- Sugar
- Yeast
- Ground malt
Apart from these edible ingredients, you will also require a vessel to collect moonshine and copper tube.
Preparation instructions
- Take a large pot and heat water in it. Continue to heat the water until it reaches a rolling boil.
- Now add cornmeal to this water. The resultant product is known as mash.
- Cool the mash solution until it is warm enough to touch. Add malt barley and sugar to the mash and allow it to sit for an hour. Allow the mixture to cool further
and then add yeast to it and stir well. - Now set the mash aside and allow it to sit/ferment undisturbed for 7 to 10 days. The mash is ready once it stops bubbling. At this point, the mash is known as sour mash or beer.
- Place the sour mash in a container and heat it to 176 degrees Fahrenheit. This heating will separate the water content from the alcohol.
- Now with the use of opper coil tubing capture the vapor in a separate container. All you need to do is to immerse one end of the tubing in cold water and other end into the container where you want to collect the vapor. As the vapors will pass through the cold copper tubing, they will condense into a liquid and get collected in the container. This residue is the moonshine.
This is the method of preparing home-made alcohol or moonshine. The drink so created is not good for consumption. Hence avoid its intake.
