Let us know the ingredients that are required to make homemade icing. They are as follows:
- 4 oz. softened butter (1 stick)
- 1 lb powdered sugar
- 2-4 tbsp milk
- ½ tsp kosher salt
- 2 tsp vanilla (or any other flavor of your choice)
The method of making homemade icing is as given in the step by step guide below:
- You have to begin by placing the softened butter stick in the mixer’s bowl. Incase your mixer has the whisk attachment, then connect it or else you can also complete the job with the help of beaters.
- Now you have to start beating the butter at about medium to high speed. Continue beating the butter till it has become light and fluffy. Make sure that you stop the mixer every minute for scraping the sides of the bowl. This process has to be continued for at least five to six minutes.
- Take a separate bowl and mix in it some vanilla flavoring and salt. Combine both the ingredients nicely so that the salt gets dissolved completely. After this, you have to bring down the speed of the mixer to low and then add this mixture of vanilla flavoring and salt to the butter which is getting beaten in the mixer. Start whipping the contents again till they become light and fluffy in consistency.
- After having added flavor and salt to the butter, you have to add sugar. For doing this, bring down the speed of the mixer again to low and start adding the sugar very slowly to the mixer’s bowl. However you have to take care that each addition of sugar gets moistened completely in the mixture before you proceed to add more sugar. This process has to be continued till all the prescribed amount of sugar has been added to the contents of the mixer’s bowl.
- The speed of the mixer has to be now raised to medium and then you have to add milk to it. Ensure that you add only 1 tsp of milk at a time. This process has to be continued till you have completed adding 2 tbsp of sugar to the contents of the mixer’s bowl.
- After having added the sugar to the bowl of the mixer, you can raise the speed of it to high and start whipping the frosting again. Incase you find that the icing has become too thick; you can add 1 tsp of milk to the mixture. Take care to add it after lowering the speed of the mixer to low. Continue with the beating of the mixture till the icing has achieved a texture of being fluffy and light. One can use any other flavor in place of vanilla. Instead of milk, you can also use lemon juice, heavy cream or rum. Incase you want the icing to be vegetarian; you can use margarine and soy milk. Make sure that your cake is completely cooled off before you use the icing on it or else it might melt.
