How to Make Hummus at Home3 How to Make Hummus at HomeHummus is also known as hummus, oumos, or humus and is a cheap Mediterranean food. This dish is made out of chick-pea cream with garlic, tahini, olive oil, salt and pepper, cumin and lemon. Traditionally hummus is eaten with pita bread. This is one of the most popular dishes in Middle Eastern countries and can be found in almost all restaurants, grocery stores, and markets. But most people find it difficult to make good hummus mainly due to the lack of proper raw materials to use as ingredients for preparing this dish. For making great hummus, yon need two prime ingredients like great tahini, and good chick-peas. It is always better to use dried peas for making hummus with a much better taste. But you can still use the canned ones to prepare fast humus in just 10 minutes. Always try to get the small kind of pies as with their sweet taste and buttery texture they are considered to be the best for making hummus.

Ingredients

  • 500 grams of chick-peas
  • 1 tea spoon of baking soda
  • 180 grams of tahini
  • 32 ml of fresh lemon juice (1/6 glass)
  • 1 tea spoon salt
  • 1 fresh green pepper
  • 1 table spoon of chopped parsley
  • Olive oil

Instructions

  1. Rinse the dry peas in water and put the peas in a bowl. Now add the baking soda along with water. Pour the water till it covers the whole humus and reaches twice the height of the humus.
  2. Mix up all these ingredients together and cover it up completely by putting a dry towel on top of the bowl. Let the mixed ingredients rest for 6 to 12 hours.
  3. After resting the humus will swell up to about twice of its initial size. Put the humus and water mix in a cooking pot having twice the capacity of the water and humus mixture.
  4. Now put the cooking pot on stove at high flame and cook the mixture till the water starts boiling. Now reduce the flames to low and cook the mixture for another 45 minutes.
  5. After cooking, clean the water from any peel that floats up and separate the water from the humus. But keep the water without throwing away as you will use it for texturing the hummus.
  6. You have to follow the above steps only if you have got dried peas. For making hummus with fresh peas follow the process from this step onwards. Save few of the pies for decoration and put the rest in a food processor and add the tahini, lemon juice, and salt along with the peas. Add an additional 100 ml of the cooking water and 130 ml of fresh water to the mixture. Mix all these ingredients together in the food processor till you get nice looking creamy dough. Now you can taste the dough and adjust it as per your taste.
  7. You can serve the hummus in a soup bowl with the olive oil on top along with the chopped parsley, green pepper and whole chick peas. You can serve the dish with pita bread, French Baguette or some other kind of bread. Normally people like to eat hummus with something sour like pickles or olives. You can also serve the dish along with all kinds of meats.
