How to Make Homemade Strawberry Jelly
Jelly and jam add a delicious taste and flavor to various types of breads. It also goes well with a wide range on biscuits and custards. You can easily purchase strawberry jelly from the market, and serve it to your family and friends. But many varieties of jellies available in the market contain some amount of chemical or preservative. The chemical is used to make the jelly last over a longer period of time. Also, these processed strawberry jams lack the original flavor and aroma of the delicious strawberries. So you have option to prepare the jelly at home and serve it to your kids with the original taste and flavor remaining intact. It will also be healthy and hygienic, and free from the chemicals and preservatives used in the commercial products. You can prepare the jelly at home by spending some time and keep it under refrigeration to serve for some weeks. It will add to the taste of toasts, peanut butter sandwiches and cakes.
Ingredients
- 1 kilogram of strawberry chopped
- ¼ cup of lemon juice
- 2 ¾ cups of cold water
- 1 cup of caster sugar
- ¼ cup of powdered gelatin
- 2/3 cup of boiling water
Instructions
- Chop the strawberries into small sized pieces, and place these inside a heat proof bowl. Use a baking paper sheet to cover the bowl. Place the bowl over water simmering inside a saucepan. Keep the bowl for about 45 minutes or till the pieces turn soft by stirring at regular intervals. Remove the bowl from heat and place it on a surface.
- Use muslin to line a sieve and place it over the bowl removed from heat. Transfer the strawberries into the sieve by using a spoon. Allow the strawberries to remain inside the sieve for about 3 to 4 hours or till the liquid is not drained out completely. Avoid pressing or stirring the fruits to drain out the liquid. Now discard the pulp from the strawberries.
- Now place the strawberry liquid, sugar, lemon juice and water into a saucepan. Combine all these ingredients by putting the saucepan over low heat. Cook by stirring frequently till the sugar is not dissolved fully with the other liquid ingredients. Now increase the heat and bring the liquid mixture to a boil.
- Remove the saucepan from heat and sprinkle the powdered gelatin over the boiling mixture. Use a fork ands whisk the mixture till the powdered gelatin is dissolved completely with the mixture. Now add the strawberry mixture to the liquid and mix the ingredients well.
- Transfer the strawberry jelly into 6 smaller dishes with capacity to hold of 1 ½ cups of jelly. Cover the dishes and keep it inside a refrigerator to set. Refrigerate the jelly for about 5 hours or leave it in the fridge overnight. The jelly can be used for making toasts and can also be served along with crackers.
- If you want to keep it for a longer period of time, you can frozen the jelly and store it inside the refrigerator.
