How to Make a Homemade Composter
Some gardeners use plastic bins for composting while others prefer to make their own composter from wooden pallets. Building a homemade composter is easy. And, if you are composting for your small garden, you can build an ideal compost bin to serve your garden.
Here are few steps of building a homemade composter.
- The first step to build a composter is to gather the materials required for a compost bin. The materials include 2 4*8 lattice panels each of 2 4X4-foot pieces, 4 2X4s cut 5 feet long, shovel, 2 large clothesline hooks, drill, Screws or nails, screwdriver, or hammer, Tape measure. You can cut the lattice panels, but, it’s better to take help of your local home improvement center to cut them.
- The next step is to decide the place where you want to keep your composter. Mark a 4X4-foot square area and the corner of the square. The marks are the point where you will place the walls and corners of your compost bin. While digging the holes for the support posts, make sure that the hole should be at least 1 foot deep. Once you dig the first hole, insert a 2X4 post and fill the hole properly with soil. Press the soil around the post so that it remains
sturdy. Follow the same procedure for the rest three posts. But, make sure that you dig each hole properly in the right place. If possible place the lattice to know the exact distance before you dig each hole. It will eliminate further hassles of re-digging the holes. - Next step is to install the walls of the composter. Place one of the lattice panels against the posts and use a drill or electric screwdriver to attach panel with the posts. Like wise join three sides of the compost bin with its walls. In case you don’t have drill or electric screwdriver, you can use traditional method that includes hammering the nails to attach the lattice panels. Leave one side of the compost bin unattached so that you can use it as front gate of the bin. If you want to make the removable and yet attached to the bin, you can use clothesline hooks to hang the lattice.
- Now your homemade compost bin is ready for composting. Fill the bin with the matters that you want to compost.
Tip:
If you have enough space in your garden you can go for two compost bins. Start the second one six months after the first one is filled. As composting takes six months to one year, by the time your first compost bin is empty, you will have another pile of compost ready for your use.
