The process of making homemade beer is divided into three phases. They are sanitizing, brewing and bottling.
Sanitization
- This is the most important step while making homemade beer. Always keep in mind that 75% of the brewing is done if one follows proper hygiene while making homemade beer. You can begin the sanitization process by cleaning up all the equipments with warm soapy water. Make sure that you rinse them well for removing the residue of soap.
- After doing so, use household bleach and sanitize all the equipments again. You can also use a no-rinse acid sanitizer for this purpose.
Brewing
- Begin by pouring around 10 liters of cold water into the plastic pail. Take a large pot and start boiling in it 7 liters of water. To this boiling water, you have to add one can of malt extract. Continue stirring and cooking this mixture for about 20 minutes. Do not cover.
- After about 20 minutes, add the sugar to the mixture and stir well. After you notice that the sugar has dissolved, you have to pour in the contents of the large pot into the plastic pail quickly. To this mixture, you have to add some bottled drinking water until the temperature reaches neutral. Notice that the pail must be around half full after adding all the contents into it.
- Use some yeast to be sprinkled over the contents of the plastic pail and stir well. Cover the pail with its lid but do not close it too tightly. Keep the pail in such a place where the temperature is around 20-24 degrees. The readiness of the beer can be tasted with a hydrometer. Remember that the reading should be 1.008 for dark beers and 1.010-1.015 for light beers. The beer should be ready to bottle after about 6-10 days.
Bottling
- For the purpose of bottling, you shall have to set the plastic pail on a table. Arrange the 12 2-liter bottles on the ground. Use a funnel to pour in 2 tsp of sugar into each bottle. Now start siphoning the beer into the bottles. Make sure that you do not disturb the sediment at the bottom of the plastic pail while siphoning the beer into the bottles.
- Screw the caps of the bottles tightly and shake the bottles to dissolve the sugar. Store the bottles in a warm area for the first few days but after that you have to shift them to a cool and dark place. Remember that the taste of the beer will improve with age.
