How to Make Home-made Play Dough

- Firstly, get all the ingredients and put them in a separate ball. The ingredients for your play dough would include flour, salt, water, cream of tarter and vegetable oil. Allow your kid to mix them together with a spoon or even with their hands.
- After the ingredients are hand mixed, place them in a saucepan, on the stove. Keep the heat on low to medium and stir the mixture for 5 to 7 minutes till a ball begins to form.
- Now you can remove the mixture from the flame and allow it to cool. You may either allow it to cool in the saucepan itself or you may place it on aluminum foil or wax paper to avoid any mess.

- Properly knead the mixture. At this point you can add some food color to the mixture in order to make it more attractive and interesting for your kid. Continue to knead it till it attains pliable consistency and is not too sticky. If you want to use different colors for the dough, then divide it into pieces and add different colors to each piece.
- Now roll them into balls and save them in airtight containers. Your play dough is ready now. While playing with it you can cut out different shapes with cutters, and make interesting models for your kid.
Tips
- If you want you can also add a tablespoon of alum to the mixture. It will make the dough less palatable to a child and hence reduce the likelihood that the child might eat it. Alum is also useful because it acts as a preservative and slows down the growth of bacteria.
- You can go on to add some fun ingredients to the dough to change the texture or appearance of the dough like desiccated coconut, or cocoa powder.
- Also consider of giving a particular smell to the dough by using peppermint or other oils. But make sure that these smells do not tempt your child to eat the dough.
- In case your dough becomes runny due to too much of water then add some more flour to it or heat it.
