How to Make Glue

How to Make Glue How to Make GlueIf you have school going kids at home, you are likely to find yourself short on glue more often than not. Handy for paper projects and craftwork, glue stock never seems to last long enough. You can learn how to make glue at home from commonly used ingredients. So the next time you find yourself hunting for glue, head straight to your kitchen instead of the neighborhood store.

There are two methods listed below for making glue at home.

Method 1

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ cup hot water
  • Strainer or coffee filter – If you don’t have a filter at home, consider securing a paper towel with a rubber band over the mouth of a cup
  1. Heat the milk over medium flame and bring it to a boil. Add one tablespoon of white vinegar to the boiling milk and wait for the milk to separate out into solid curd and liquid whey. Keep stirring in between. You can increase the quantity of vinegar if you are using more milk.
  2. Once the milk has completely separated, filter the solution into a cup using a strainer or coffee filter. The liquid whey will filter out into the cup while the curd gets trapped in the filter. Use a spoon to squeeze the curd for any remaining whey. Ensure that all whey has been drained out from the curd.
  3. Place the curd in another empty cup and mash it lightly with a spoon. Add 2 spoons of hot water and 1 teaspoon of baking soda to the curd. Stir well to remove lumps and for the glue to achieve an even creamy consistency. If it gets too watery or lumpy, add a little more soda. If you want more liquid glue, stir in some more water.
  4. Place the glue in an airtight container and store it inside the refrigerator. Your glue is now ready for use.
  5. Remember to discard the glue when it starts smelling like spoiled milk.

If you want to try out a still simpler way to make glue at home, you can opt for method 2 given below.

Method 2

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups white flour
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 1 cup cold water
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon alum

1. Sieve the flour and put it in a mixing bowl. Add sugar and mix well. Pour in the cold water slowly and keep stirring until you achieve a smooth consistent paste.

2. Heat the mixture over medium flame and add boiling water to it. Keep stirring the paste so that no lumps are formed. Boil the mixture till it becomes somewhat stiff. Remove from heat and add alum. Cool the solution to room temperature. You can now go about using your homemade glue on all your art and paper work.
3. Store the glue in an airtight container. In case it hardens, add a little warm water before use. This glue, however works best when used instantly.
