Make sure you consider the color scheme of your walls and floor when you get the material for drapes. Also remember that drapes are thicker that curtains. So get velvet or such thicker material for making drapes. You can get blackout lining when preparing the drapes for your bedroom. While the drapes material is heavy, you must get flexible lining material so that it remains loosely under the drapes.

It is essential to cut the fabric properly before starting to stitch. Take proper measurements and cut the material. You must make doubly sure that you get the measurements right else, the drapes would appear out of place. The trick to measure the windows for making the drapes are to fix the rod and the hanging rings and then taking the measurements from there. For the width, you can take the width of your window. Make sure you cut the fabric double the width and leave ten inches of fabric more than the length.
Choose the fabric well to match the color scheme. You can either take the same share or something that adds glamour to the room.
For the bottom, you can fold the drape of about 4 inches and iron it and repeat the process to make it stay stiff. The hem should be done from four inches measured from the bottom. The hem should be done at the top of the second fold. You can fix pins to keep the material stiff and start stitching.
For the lining, fold up two inches and iron it and repeat the procedure and hem it properly.
You would then need to attach the Drapes and Lining. Make sure the lining is about one and half inches from the drape material. The raw sides of the lining and the fabric should be attaches and stitched. The lining need not be as wide as the drape material so you would have extra drape fabric with you with you stitch.
Iron the drape fabric by pulling it upside down and make sure there is even amount of fabric left on the lining. You can get mitering corners with the extra fabric that you have. You can do a bit of blind stitching to make sure it looks neat.
Stitch the top of the fabric by folding two inches in. And you are ready to fix the drapes with the rings.
