It will hardly take you a few minutes to arrange the ingredients and then make the syrup. Although you can get readymade chocolate syrup in the stores, it gives you a special thrill to make it at home and savor the taste even while making it. There can be several variations to the syrup depending on the ingredients you use.
Ingredients
½ cup cocoa powder
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
Pinch of salt
1 tsp vanilla extract
Procedure:
- Take a big pot and put the cocoa and the sugar in it. Mix well and make a solution by adding the water to it. Stir and mix well so that you get a homogenous paste without any lumps. If you pour all the water at the same time or do not stir while pouring the water into the pot, you will get lumps which will not help in preparing delicious syrup.
- Put the pot on the stove and apply low heat. Keep stirring so that the sugar dissolves without forming any lumps. Keep stirring and wait for the solution to come to a boil. Simmer for a while but keep stirring so that the chocolate does not stick to the bottom and get burnt. Boil the mixture till it thickens.
- You can know when the chocolate is ready by the look of it. It will look dark and beautiful with a shine on it. Take the pot out of the heat and leave the syrup to cool down. It will get still thicker as it cools down. Pour it into glass jar and store in fridge.
Another Variation:
Ingredients:
¾ cup dark cocoa powder
1 tsp vanilla extract
½ cup cane sugar
¼ tsp salt
A pinch of ground nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice
Procedure:
- Just like you had done in the previous recipe, mix all the ingredients but carefully. Mix all the powdered substances first and then add the liquid ones little at a time with stirring. Make sure that the mixture is smooth and without any lumps. When you have mixed all the ingredients well, put it on the stove.
- Simmer till the sugar has dissolved and then increase the heat so that the mixture starts boiling. It will take only about 5 minutes for the syrup to be ready. Let the syrup thicken a bit and then remove the pot from the heat.
- Keep stirring while heating lest the chocolate gets burnt. When the syrup has cooled down to room temperature, you can pour into a glass container and refrigerate.
This chocolate syrup can make pancakes and even ice cream much more delicious. You can be more creative and think of adding many other ingredients so that the taste will vary in every sauce that you make. Your kids will surely love you for it.
