How to Make Candied Yams

  • 2 large sweet potatoes
  • A measuring cup

  • You have to begin the process by washing both of the sweet potatoes in lukewarm water. Make sure that the water with which you will be washing the potatoes is not too hot or cold.
  • After having washed the potatoes, you have to slice them into the thickness of a cookie. (for example: an Oreo cookie)
  • Take a frying pan and place it over medium heat. Put some butter in the pan for lubricating it. Make sure that the entire bottom of the frying pan has butter spread over it.
  • After the butter has evenly spread across the pan, you have to place the sliced potatoes into it and fry them for around 5 minutes.
  • Take the measuring cup and measure in it about ¼ cup of water. Now put this water into the frying pan. Cover the pan with a lid and allow the potatoes to simmer in it for about 15 minutes.
  • After the stipulated time of 15 minutes, you have to add 1/3 of the butter into the pan. Stir the potatoes gently so that the butter gets absorbed into them properly.
  • Take some cinnamon and sprinkle on them on the top of the potatoes until you notice that the top is covered completely with it.

  • Repeat the same procedure for nutmeg. Add the nutmeg to the frying pan and stir the potatoes gently so that all of them are covered with the nutmeg.
  • After adding nutmeg, you will have to add in some brown sugar to the sliced potatoes in the pan and stir the contents gently. At the same time you have to add around ½ tsp of salt to the potatoes and stir them properly.
  • Incase you notice that some more water is required to be added to the frying pan, then you can add around 2 tbsp of water.
  • Now add 1 tsp of honey and 2 sp of white sugar to the sliced potatoes in the frying pan and stir them gently.
  • Now that you have finished adding all the ingredients to the pan, you shall have to let the contents of the pan to simmer for a while. This will make the potatoes become soft.
  • After you find that the sliced potatoes have completely cooked, remove the pan from the heat and allow them to cool off a bit for around 30 minutes. This is done for allowing the spices that you have added to soak into the potatoes.
