How to Make Candied Yams
Candied yams are one of the most common dishes in South America that is served as a holiday side dish, especially at thanksgiving. Due to its perfect sweet and comforting flavor it is highly popular amongst those who have a sweet tooth.
Made from the flesh of cooked potatoes or from canned sweet potatoes along with several other sugary ingredients, candied yams have a unique flavor that makes it perfect item for holiday feast. Steps
- Take a large pot, half- filled with water. Now place this pot on stove and allow the water to boil. Once the water starts boiling, add some potatoes to it. At this point reduce the flame to medium-low. Cover the pot with the lid and allow it to simmer for half an hour till the potatoes become tender. Once they are tender remove them from the boiling water and allow them to cool at room temperature.

- Now prepare the glaze for the candied yam. Take a small pot and melt some butter over low flame. Add some brown sugar, water and cinnamon to melted butter and stir. Keep stirring the ingredients till they acquire a smooth texture.
- Once the potatoes are cool, remove the skin and cut each potato into evenly sized slices. You may go for half-inch sizes; this size is good enough to ensure the potatoes slices absorb the glaze flavor properly.
- Now bring potatoes and prepared glaze together in a baking dish and cover it with a lid. Allow it to bake for at least 30minutes. Make sure that while baking you occasionally stir the glaze over the potatoes.
- After 30 minutes of baking, remove the baking dish from the oven. Now pour the baked dish into a serving dish and ensure that the glaze or the sweet syrup drips over yams.
- In order to give some additional flavor to your candied yam you may use some marshmallows. Add some marshmallows over the potatoes and place the serving dish in the oven (uncovered) for few minutes till the marshmallows turn golden. Now your dish is ready to be savored.
Tips
- Make sure to preheat the oven to 375 degrees
- If you want to go for too sweet yams, then you may use some additional white sugar.
- To get the desired softness of the potatoes you may add a little water as needed.
- You may also add some water to potatoes to avoid burning and sticking.
- You may use Allspice in place of cinnamon
- Use low heat to prevent burning and overcooking.
