Instructions on How to Make Butter milk
- Firstly, get all the required ingredients for making butter milk. You need to buy whole milk, cream of tartar or lemon juice as per your choice and convenience. You can easily get these ingredients from your local store.

- Now start the preparation. Take one tablespoon of cream of tartar for every cup of whole milk. In case, you do not have cream of tartar then you can use lemon juice as its substitute in the same quantity ratio.
- Stir the mix and leave it for at least 15 minutes at room temperature.
- Continue to stir the mix after 15 minutes when the milk starts to curdle.
- Now your buttermilk is ready. Serve it or add it to the batter of pancakes and cookies.
- If not using immediately, then refrigerate the buttermilk to ensure it lasts for long.
Important Tips
- Though buttermilk is safe when placed in the refrigerator, there are chances that some mold may develop on the inner walls of the container where buttermilk is kept. In this case, all you need to do is remove the mold and use the buttermilk as per your requirement. The molds are usually not harmful.
- When buttermilk is prepared by adding acid to the whole milk then there are chances that buttermilk will have longer shelf life. This is because acid is natural preservative that prevents the growth of pathogenic bacteria
- If you need to prepare a larger quantity of buttermilk like a gallon of buttermilk, then you must add 1 quart buttermilk to 1 gallon of fresh whole milk and mix the ingredients properly after pouring them into a large container.
