How to Make a Necktie
Neckties can make your formal suit stand out. This is the reason when you choose a tie, you take more time than while choosing the suit. The reason is that it adds the needed glamour to even a simple suit. Ties also make superb gift and show your taste in volumes. Though there are designers who offer unique collections, you must know which one is best suitable for your suit and occasion. As the tie is all about your individuality it pays to be a bit more selective. This is when the tragedy strikes. But the fact is that you may never get the perfect tie. So the best options is choosing the fabric you like and making a necktie for yourself for to gift somebody special. This way you can even customize the style and the size you need without having to compromise on the readily available sizes.
Making a necktie would need your stitching skills as well as your creativity if you want to get a perfect product. You may think that a tie is just a piece of cloth that is folded and stitched in a simple manner but this is not the truth. Like more clothes, they require proper cuts and stitches. So, pull your creative and tailoring skills and get on with making the conspicuous looking necktie that can make a normal man look like Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt.
You must however first of all choose the style and size for the necktie you want to make. Depending on that you need to buy the fabric, lining and the rest of the items. Even you can buy tie patterns from the market and follow the instruction. But here is a list of materials that you would need to make a necktie and the steps to stitch it for your easy reference:
- 1/4 yard silk fabric and matching thread
- 1/4 yard fusible wool lining
- Tie pattern
- Measuring tape
- Marking pencil
- Scissors
- Iron
- Sewing machine
- Safety pin
- Hand sewing needle
Steps to Stitch
Stretch the silk on your sewing table and remove any ruffles with you hand or by using the iron.- Place the patter on the silk on one side making sure you get the right shape while you do not waste the fabric.
- Use the marking pencil to draw out the shape on the wrong side of the silk. Usually for the 4 fold tie pattern you would have 3 patterns for the tie fabric and one for the interlining.
- You can cut out the fabric and the wool with an angle of 45 degrees to the selvage.
- Now cut out the shape with care and make sure you don’t have a feathered edge.
- You can use the wool interlining fabric in the similar manner and cut out the shape carefully.
- Now use the small tipping patterns that you have and cut out the fabric.
- Place the right of the tipping to the wrong side of the tie fabric and sew the edges smoothly making the edge look sharp. Similarly for the other end you need to sew it in the similar manner. You can even use a poster board in a triangular shape to help you get the perfect edge.
- You need to turn the ends inside out to make sure both the right sides are visible. Smoothen the edges with your fingers.
- Sew the three main pieces of the silk fabric and use the wool interlining inside the tie fabric.
- Fold the tie fabric from both sides making a perfect triangular shape.
- Use the pins to hold the edges together.
- Place the keeper at the desired spot and pin that as well.
- You can use the hidden stitch to sew the loose ends that you pinned.
- Smoothen the fabric again and give it a light iron to make it look neat.
