How to Make a Female Toga
If we dissect the toga costume technically then we will notice a fact that roman women never wore togas. However, for those people who are not so interested in getting deep into the technicalities of the costume, a toga is an easy wear when you are in a hurry. If you really wish for a Greek or Roman look, then wear a toga over a tunic. The things that are
needed for making a female toga are as follows:
- Around 2 flat sheets
- Around 6 safety pins/broaches
- A belt
The method of making a female toga is made simpler and easier by following the step by step guide given below:
- You can begin the process of making a female toga by first wrapping the flat sheet around yourself. Make sure that you are wrapping it just under the armpits. Think of the flat sheets as a towel that you are using to get out from the shower. Incase you have colored sheets, then do not panic. They can also serve the purpose of a female toga well.
- There is a fair chance that the sheets which you are using will be dragging on the floor unless you are using a very small sheet. In order to prevent the sheets from dragging on the floor, you need to fold its top edge over more towards outside. This top edge of the sheet is the one which is under your armpits. If you want to fold the sheets evenly then you can also take the sheets off. You also have to adjust the length of the sheets because finally the toga’s length would be 3 to 6 inches shorter than what it is currently. Remember that the folded portion of the sheet should
come down as long as a long shirt’s length. - Now just move the opening a bit so that it is along one side of the body. After doing that, pin the top folded edges of the front and as well as of the back together so that they form shoulder straps. Incase you desire long sleeves or the Peek-a-boo shoulder look, then pin up those together in 2 to 3 places on each of the shoulder. The easiest method of doing this would be to lay the folded female toga on the floor and then pin the toga shoulder straps to it while adjusting the position of the pin on the toga with your body.
- Now you have to make the back piece tuck around the front one and for doing this you shall have to overlap the opening on your side.
- After doing this properly, you need to tie up a belt around your waist. This belt can be put up high on your waist like an empire waist line or can be put over/under the optional folded over the top edge.
- You can pull out some of the fabric of the sheet through the belt so that it blouses over the top. Although this step is entirely optional, but it adds a particular style to your female toga.
- Now the next step involves the addition of the outer palla. This palla makes the female toga look more like a one shoulder toga of a man. It can also keep you warm during the cold. Now take the second sheet and drape it over the left shoulder with more of it towards the back. You have to then pull the back around to make toss over your left shoulder again.
- You can add any number of right symbols to resemble a character from ancient mythology.
