How to Make a Compost Bin1 How to Make a Compost Bin Before getting on to the task of building a compost bin, let us first understand what the word “compost” means. Compost literally means a kind of garden soil which is made up from a mixture of weeds, leaves, kitchen waste; straw, contaminated water etc. This soil is an excellent source of natural fertilizer and can be used for our gardens. You can very easily build a compost bin at your home. Let us assemble the things which are required for doing this.

Four wooden pallets
Four bolt latches
32 wood screws/bailing wire

The process for making a compost bin is given below:

First determine the height and width of the compost bin that you are making. For our purposes, let us consider a bin of 36” of height and 25” wide on each side.
You will need 4 wooden pallets which are cut to 36” in height and 25” in width. You can buy it from the market or cut the pallets at home also. You will need a saw to cut the wood pieces at home.
You will need to purchase 36 screws and 4 bolt latches for the purpose of tautening the bin.
Now you need to join three wooden pallets by screwing them together tightly. To support the pallets, you have to insert the screws at equal distances. But incase you are using wire instead of screws, then you will have to tie the wires tightly to support the pallets.
Now take the fourth pallet and fix it just opposite to the back pallet and then screw it tightly.
Take the bolt latches and fasten them on the fourth pallet. This pallet will be the front of your bin and shall serve as the door of the compost bin.
Your compost bin is now ready for use.
