How to Keep a Bird Healthy How to Keep a Bird HealthyIf you have a pet bird in your home, you will be responsible for the good health of the bird. Since you love the bird so much, you will hate it if the bird falls ill for some reason or even dies due to some disease. There are many things you should be aware of to keep the bird healthy. It is a good thing to know about these tips in advance so that you don’t accidentally cause the illness of the bird. Let us look at a few tips which can help to keep the bird healthy.

  • Bird Cage – You must have kept the bird in a cage. Make sure that this cage is right for the bird and is not harmful in any way. Since the birds tend to use their beaks on the bars of the cage, you should make sure that the material of the cage is not toxic for the bird. Some bird cages have lead paint on them or have lead, brass and zinc embellishments too. Some birds are allergic to these metals and may suffer from seizures and blindness, ultimately leading to death.
  • Bird Diet – You should try to provide the bird with its natural food like berries of all kinds. The bird will feel more at home when it gets the food that it would have eaten in the wild. To make it suitable for the bird, you can soak the berries to remove the harmful germs on it. Don’t try to feed a bird with the stimulants that you have like tea and coffee as it can cause its pulses to beat faster, resulting in death. Don’t give any alcoholic beverages to the bird and also avoid avocados. You can also take an expert’s advice before thinking of what to feed the bird.
  • Toys – When the bird is there in its cage, allow it to play with some toys. This will keep it occupied for some time and also keep it healthy. The toys that you provide should be safe for the bird. Try to avoid toys which have ropes or chains so that the bird does not get entangled in them. See that there are no nails or other harmful things on the toys before giving them to the bird.
  • Exercise – Your pet bird needs exercise to stay healthy. There is nothing wrong if you allow it to leave its cage for some time in the day. You can close the doors and windows of the room and open the cage door. It will soon venture out and even play with you. It might be afraid in the beginning, but soon it will overcome its fears. It will also return to its cage after its play time is over as it will think of the cage to be its home.
  • Clean Air – It is very important to keep the air around your pet bird clean so that it does not get infected by any airborne diseases. An example is a HEPA system which is an air filter which can clear the air and also get rid of the dust and dander coming from your bird.
  • Sociable – Birds are very sociable and love to interact with humans. So make it a point to keep the cage in a place which is accessible to all the members of the family. This will help the bird to feel like a part of the family and the kids will also love to play with it.

In this way, a pet bird can stay healthy and you can also rest easily that the bird is happy and fit.
